Communication standards should focus on the global 5G is still in the vision stage

As a century-old store in the telecommunications equipment market, Ericsson can always accurately grasp the future development trend of communication technology and industry.

And as the technology "big deal" of this century-old store, Ericsson's senior vice president and chief technology officer Ulf Ewaldsson has his own unique insights into communication technology and industry development trends. In this regard, at the 5th Ericsson Business Innovation Forum (EBIF) held in Tokyo, Japan, Ai Huaxin shared.

Breaking the bottleneck of heterogeneous networks: carrier aggregation + small base station

There is no doubt that the products and solutions of telecom equipment companies must be targeted for deployment around the needs of operators. With the shift of the operator's business focus, equipment manufacturers must also keep up with the latest needs of operators.

Currently, operators have shifted from voice-centric business models to mobile data traffic-centric business models. According to Ai Huaxin, operators must first have a forward-looking investment and improve user experience by investing in high-performance networks; at the same time, network investment must have performance indicators to measure network performance, mainly around the experience gained by end users In addition, operators are also redefining users, through innovative marketing, combined with innovative product services to make their users willing to pay for better quality services and services, thereby driving further growth in operator profits.

At present, mobile broadband is changing more and more industries, and the difficulties are network capacity and network coverage. Ai Huaxin believes, "We can meet the latest needs of users through a heterogeneous network. To this end, Ericsson launched the small cell product Ericsson Point System to complete the evolution and innovation of small cells.

Regarding the challenges posed by the current mobile network layered and heterogeneous trend, Ai Huaxin pointed out, "First of all, the spectrum resources are now exhausted, and different spectrums need to be combined together for carrier aggregation to maximize the use of spectrum resources; Secondly, the current distance between base stations is mainly optimized for voice. Today, with mobile data services as the mainstay, it is necessary to realize the density of base stations and increase efforts to solve the challenges brought by heterogeneous networks. "

Indoor coverage such as shopping malls and office spaces is also a huge challenge. Ai Huaxin said that in order to avoid interference between network signals, we need to be able to build more point systems or small base stations within the existing spectrum to make full use of existing frequency bands. Problems with indoor coverage.

Talking about whether the point system will support TD-LTE in the future, Ai Huaxin responded that there are no major technical obstacles. Whether the TD-LTE version of the system will be a bit depends on market demand, but the development momentum of TD-LTE Very good, China's TD-LTE is also advancing smoothly, so in the future it is possible to launch a TD-LTE version of the point system.

5G is still in the vision stage

For the evolution of the next generation mobile communication technology after LTE, the industry has begun to focus on the research and development of 5G technology. Ericsson believes that the development of a networked society will bring a surge in mobile data traffic, and it is expected that data traffic will increase by a factor of 1,000 in the next decade; at the same time, there will be a huge increase in connected devices and the emergence of the Internet of Things and other new innovative applications Tens of billions of connected devices will be born, and 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020, and will produce unprecedented diversity requirements and application scenarios related to wireless connectivity.

These trends have led to the emergence of 5G research projects for the future wireless communication environment and needs. The amount of mobile data in the 5G era will increase by 1,000 times, and the user data rate will reach 100 times today. The number of device interconnections at the same moment can reach the present. 100 times, and all of this is done in a low-cost and sustainable way.

But in the opinion of Ai Huaxin, 5G is only a vision today, and commercial deployment of 5G may begin as early as 2020. He further pointed out, "The original intention of the 4G network is not to adapt to the network society mentioned today, but to adapt to the high-speed access requirements for smartphones, tablets and various new terminal devices."

"And there will be more machine-to-machine interactions in the future, we must have a vision from now on, but 5G is still in the stage of vision consideration." Ai Huaxin said that Ericsson will not look at 5G As a brand-new wireless communication technology that can be launched now, 4G has just entered the initial stage.

Standards should focus on the world to avoid island effects

In addition to an in-depth analysis of the technical development trends of the operator's network itself, Ai Huaxin also particularly emphasized the importance of the unification of communication technology standards. At any time, communication standards should focus on the development of the global market and try to avoid the emergence of technology islands.

For example, in Japan, although Japan entered the 4G business earlier in the Asia-Pacific region, in the 2G era, Japan used its own communication standard PHS, which caused the Japanese mobile communication industry to be less compatible with the world, which directly aggravated Japan ’s “island” "Effect" and directly cause the decline of the Japanese telecommunications equipment industry in the 3G era due to the inability to adapt well to global standards. Today, GSM mobile phones still cannot roam in Japan.

In this regard, Ai Huaxin said, "The telecommunications industry has been a global market from the first day of development. One of the basic values of the telecommunications industry is to connect and connect all parts of the world. We also want to have global standards for TD-LTE; on the contrary, if too many individual markets propose unique standards, it will hinder the global nature of the entire industry, and will bring some standards that are neither compatible nor competitive. . "

In addition, Ai Huaxin also specifically pointed out that if a local supplier and a local operator are too close in the market of a country, all innovations are only between local buyers and local sellers. Then there will be a kind of interaction between closed-door suppliers and operators, but it cannot be copied and promoted to the global market. There is indeed such a risk.

"We have done a lot of customization work on the specifications of Chinese operators, but from a long-term perspective, if such customization requirements are too much and too fine, it may cause a certain degree of isolation in the development of a certain market." Ai Huaxin emphasized that if there is an efficient solution, global scale is a very important factor. To this end, Ericsson already has one of Ericsson ’s largest R & D centers in Beijing, and also has large R & D centers in Shanghai, Guangdong, Nanjing, and Chengdu.
