Adidas, a well-known German sports brand, will sell robot- made shoes from next year, and the price will be the same as that of Asian foundries.
The British "Guardian" reported that CEO Herbert Heiner opened the new "speed factory" in Ansbach, southern Germany, to the media. The factory currently under construction covers an area of 4,600 square meters and will be automated to build shoes in the future to speed up production. The factory will launch 500 pairs of test shoes in the third quarter of this year and will start mass production next year.
More than 20 years ago, Adidas stopped producing shoes in Germany and transferred the factory to Asia. At present, its employment in Asia is about 1 million, and production costs are increasing. Adidas' sales of shoes in 2015 were 310 million pairs, most of which were from Asian foundries. In order to achieve the production target of 2020, the company needs to increase production by more than 30 million pairs per year.
Heiner said that Adidas has planned to establish a second "speed factory" in the United States next year and is planning to build factories in the UK and France. However, he said that robotic shoe factories will not immediately replace Asian foundries. Gerd Mantz, head of company innovation and technology, also said, "Our goal is not to achieve full automation."
