LED industry will usher in new color quality standards

Although there is no official news yet, the LED industry has been circulating news that IES will have new color quality standards. At the Strategies in Light conference, Jim Brodrick from the USD epartment of Energy (DOE) mentioned the matter. The IES committee is trying to develop a second standard to address color reproduction and gamut problems, which is a drawback that CRI has not addressed.

The disadvantage of CRI is that it does not evaluate high-saturation color reproducibility, and high-saturation light sources are often used in the high-end retail industry.

To solve this problem, a few years ago U National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) introduced the Color quality scale (CQS) standard. However, in 2012, the CIE Technical Committee (TC) 1-69 rejected the adoption of the CQS standard and continued to use CRI.

At the same time, new standards are being introduced. The Lighting Research Center (LRC) of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) proposes to use the Gamut Area Index (GAI) to characterize the restoration of color by color with GRI. GAI passes color gamut, saturation, brightness 3D to accurately express colors. From a one-dimensional point-to-point comparison to a two-dimensional comparison. CRI (Color Rendering Index) is used to describe the consistency of colors in lighting. By contrast with the reference source, the color coverage is very limited and the comparison results are different. The GAI (Color Gamut Index) is used to describe the color saturation/chroma in lighting. The combination of the two can more accurately express color.

Although there are no industry standards, we are looking forward to the introduction of more complete color quality standards to help the industry advance to a more human-centered high-quality light source.
