ARM: Open mbed platform to help application innovation in the Internet of Things industry

Recently, the “2016 China International Internet of Things and Wisdom China Summit Forum” hosted by the International Internet of Things Trade and Application Promotion Association and the Guangdong Internet of Things Association was successfully held in Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Mr. Zhou Zhisheng, an expert on ARM Internet of Things technology in China, was invited to attend and share the ARM's understanding of the Internet of Things and the company's next plan with the theme of "ARM's Internet of Things Status and Planning".

Mr. Zhou Zhisheng said that in ARM's view, there are two main driving methods for the development of the Internet of Things. The first type of IoT demand caused by internal optimization needs, such as predictable maintenance, transportation and tracking in wind power generation and manufacturing. Network computing, big data analysis in all walks of life, etc. Secondly, on a better user experience, the current user experience is more predictable and proactive user experience.

As a global company, ARM's Cortex-M series cpu IP is widely used in a variety of connected applications, such as smart grid, smart healthcare, smart city, smart home. In addition, ARM is based on the chip, and is also actively deployed on the Internet of Things, mainly based on the ARM mbed platform.

According to Mr. Zhou Zhisheng, ARM mbed consists of mbed OS and mbed Device Connector. Mbed OS is an open source device platform based on ARM Cortex-M architecture for Internet of Things, and mbed Device Connector is a cloud connection platform, which is mainly responsible for device security access and device management. Using mbed OS on the application device makes it easy to access the mbed Device Connector cloud. But the mbed Device Connector itself does not do any processing on the data, so the analysis of big data for ARM is left to the cloud partners to complete.

Although there are many IoT platforms at present, ARM mbed has its own unique features, mainly in four aspects:

1. Utilize the ARM mbed platform solution to apply simple and easy development.

Mbed itself has dozens of different chip and equipment manufacturers, more than 100 different development boards, developers have relatively high IoT equipment development foundation. At the same time, mbed is a big ecosystem. Hundreds of thousands of developers will contribute their own well-made applications and devices, which will greatly help the development of the Internet of Things.

2, ARM has a large and complete ecosystem, providing strong support for ARM chips and cloud services.

3. High security.

Security mechanisms are embedded in the security of the Internet of Things from chips and devices to the cloud.

4. Advantages in managing IoT devices.

First of all, it is compatible with various communication methods commonly used in connection, such as wifi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, NB-IoT, etc.; ARM mbed platform has made common protocols such as HTTP, CoAP, LWM2M according to international standards; different equipment manufacturers access in a unified manner. To the cloud, the cost of equipment management can be greatly reduced;

According to ARM analysis, with the various communication methods, various equipment management and security requirements have led to the geometric complexity of the complexity of the Internet of Things platform and middleware. The IoT platform and middleware take up almost 70% of the entire IoT application development cycle.
