Five-quarter loss of 4.85 billion! HTC still save it?

Beijing time on August 2 news, HTC announced second-quarter results today, as of June 30 a quarter, HTC revenue of 18.9 billion Taiwan dollars (about 598 million US dollars), gross profit margin of 11.4%; operating losses of 4.2 billion Taiwan dollars ( About 133 million US dollars), operating margin was -22.5%. In the second quarter, HTC received a one-time income of NT$1 billion (approximately US$31.65 million) due to the sale of Taoyuan land. HTC incurred a net loss of NT$3.1 billion (approximately US$98 million) after tax in the second quarter, equivalent to a loss of 3.71 NTD per share.

In the previous four quarters, HTC had continuously lost NT$51, 49, 41.48 billion, and NT$21.3 billion (approximately RMB4.85 billion) in cumulative losses in the five quarters.

Even in the last profitable 2015 first quarter, only NT$20 million (approximately RMB4.2 million) was made.

HTC said in its financial news release: “The second quarter results were even stronger. We launched the flagship smartphones HTC 10 and Vive VR systems. The HTC brand was further strengthened and the revenue in the second quarter increased by 27% compared to the first quarter.”

In the first quarter, Vive sales were hot. From April 5 onwards, HTC delivered VR helmets to consumers on schedule. The enterprise VR products also started to be sold in June. HTC Chairman and CEO Wang Xuehong said: "For HTC, the second quarter is an exciting quarter, we have launched a flagship smart phone, also launched a consumer VR system, their design, workmanship quality, user experience in the corresponding field Both are in the leading position, in line with our commitment to 'The Pursuit of Brilliance'."

In early April, the HTC Vive helmets began selling at a price of $799. How many helmets were sold in the second quarter? HTC did not provide data. Can new products break even? HTC executives refused to respond.

Yuta Investment Consulting analyst Jeff Pu said: "It is very difficult for HTC to achieve break-even this year because its smart phones still face great challenges. The sales of Vive helmets are still small. According to Jeff Cape's estimate, HTC shipped 80,000 sets of helmets in the second quarter. In the first half of this year, rival Oculus Rift shipped about 300,000 sets and Rift was priced at US$599. Jeff Pu believes that PC-style VR still has some fatal flaws. Only by solving these problems can VR helmets be popularized. For example, if you want to enjoy a superior VR gaming experience, users must have a powerful computer to install large amounts of memory.

Before the financial report, HTC shares rose 2.3% in today's trading to close at 97.9 Taiwan dollars. Since April, HTC's stock price has risen more than 10%.
