Huawei recruits former Oculus researcher as chief scientist in VR and AR

Former Oculus researcher and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Steve Lavalle revealed on Facebook that he will join Huawei as the chief scientist of VR/AR/MR and be fully responsible for Huawei's research and development in this field.

On the evening of December 29, He Gang, president of Huawei's mobile phone product line, confirmed the participation of Steve Lavalle to the journalist. In June of this year, He Gang said in an interview with a journalist that there is a shortage of talents in China's VR/AR. Huawei plans to recruit top-notch technical talents on a global scale.

Oculus is a well-known VR device manufacturer and was acquired by Facebook in 2014.

Steve Lavalle is a big cattle expert in this field. Public information shows that he started working at Oculus VR in September 2012 and until January 2015 he was a major scientist at Oculus. During this time, he developed the IMU-based head tracking method for core software, and led the team of perceived psychologists to provide a major solution for virtual reality calibration systems and user experience comfort design.

He is also a co-developer of the Oculus SDK and has helped Oculus develop two core technologies, including predictive tracking sensing technology that reduces VR device lag, reduces dizziness, and sensor correction technology.

Lavalle said that he and Huawei are in agreement on the prospects of VR/AR. They believe that it is necessary to take a holistic view of technology research and development in this field, and must closely integrate hardware, software, human perception and neuroscience. He also mentioned that Huawei has a global business, and China is also a rising VR/AR market. Lavalle also attached a photo of wearing Huawei's work clothes in a statement announcing its participation in Huawei.

Huawei terminal CEO Yu Chengdong also confirmed the participation of Lavalle to the media. Yu Chengdong said that he personally interviewed Lavalle, and Huawei hopes to become one of the leading companies in the field of VR/AR.
