Live broadcast, allowing the global audience to experience the "Olympic" farewell speech in a 360 ° environment.

Preliminary preparation

The VRScout team has been discussing the White House since January 2016. President Obama is a leader who is passionate about new technologies. He was the first president to post in American history and the first Mr. President to broadcast live on Facebook and play Snapchat filters. In the 360° video work "Through The Ages" by Felix & Paul about Yosemite National Park, the president also appeared in the film and became a milestone in the history of VR video.

In view of this, the VRScout team also envisaged a variety of ways to complete the Obama farewell speech, one of which is more daring, they want to use the space capture technology to record the president's speech before the speech, and then save the data in a holographic way. Come down. They called this project: Holographic Bama (HOLOBAMA). Obviously, this matter did not happen later.

After several months of coordination, the team was finally allowed to conduct a live VR broadcast for the president's farewell speech, which was already New Year's Day in 2017, only one week away from the farewell speech. Fortunately, the team has a close relationship with Nokia and Radiant Images, and can get the equipment and everything needed in a short time.

How to shoot

In terms of equipment, the team chose Nokia's OZO for shooting. IN2 guesses because VRScout's good friend is Nokia, and Radiant Images is Nokia's designated OZO sales and rental company, so you know.

The team flew to Chicago a few days before the event to prepare, communicate with the White House officials, and step on the spot. The team brought a total of four OZO cameras, three to the battle, and one as the backup. For reasons such as security, once the location is determined, the team has only a short time to assume the machine.

Key: Be sure to fight for camera position

All the students who have taken 360° video of the big scene should know this pain. That is, there is basically no concept for the VR live broadcast. They simply don’t understand why your camera must be inserted in the middle and the middle. position. Because traditional equipment has Zoom function, they don't need to be able to complete the task very well, but obviously VR camera is not good, even OZO.

In communication with the White House, the team has always stressed that at least one piece of equipment needs to be within 3 to 4 meters of the president. After arriving at the venue, the team also spared no effort to fight for the location of the White House security, the latter's goal is to control the media in the media area. Efforts to achieve results, the team at least obtained a pass for shooting equipment in the seating area, although there is only one.

From the picture, the team originally wanted to put the machine in the area closest to the president, one on the front and one on the left and the right. The ideal is very full, the reality is very skinny, and finally only one machine stays in the area, and the other two unfortunately retreat to the media area.

Light and sound

There are two important factors in 360° video shooting that can't be ignored. One is the light and the other is the sound. For this event, the sound becomes the most direct one. Although OZO has 8 microphones that can record panoramic sounds, the team chose to use the Mic channel directly in front of the president. After all, the president's speech is much more important than the ambient sound.

For the team, there is really limited control over lighting. On the stage and behind the president's speech are clusters of lights, while the media area is relatively dark. If you watch the VR live broadcast on the same day, you should know that the picture of the 2nd position is the darkest, so the team rarely cuts this position during the live broadcast. The No. 3 machine got the best picture because it was in the middle of the podium and was closest to the president.

How to push live broadcast

In several live broadcast platforms, Youtube is the most direct video stream, which is why VRScout chose to embed the video frame of Youtube in the webpage for users to watch.

There are also push streams on Facebook and Twitter, but for these platforms to complete 360° live video, some development is needed. Periscope's 360 live broadcast is only for specific users. Facebook's 360 live broadcast is still in the Alpha stage, and only NG has done a live broadcast. Since OZO is used, of course, OZO's Live live mode is adopted. The students of the vantage.tv team set up a relay station in the media area to monitor and switch between the three video streams.

The team used three Elemental encoders to encode each OZO video stream, and also prepared Wowza as a backup.

Meaning is greater than substance

Regarding VR live broadcast, 87870 has written many articles to explain, in the current situation, VR live broadcast still has a lot of areas for improvement. VR live broadcast is not good, it is not much related to the people and events being photographed. Whether it's Obama or Faye Wong, VR Live is a big PR opportunity for hardware and shooting teams, and it doesn't help the audience at the level of art and appreciation. Of course, the continuous attempts of the shooting team can change the views of traditional industry practitioners to a certain extent, laying the foundation for the upgrade and development of VR live broadcast.
