The principle of AlterEgo is not to read minds, but to use the widespread phenomenon of "silent reading." Initially, they searched for a location on the person's face which was the most reliable source of neural signals. It was found that the signals of the electrodes at seven locations can always maintain a high recognition rate.

The data is sent to the bottom layer, its node processes the data and passes it to the next layer, and so on, and finally outputs the SOM result.
Through the Bluetooth connection, AlterEgo will transmit the recognized data to the computer. The computer will complete the task and send the result back to AlterEgo.
The device is also equipped with a bone conduction headset that transmits vibrations to the inner ear through the bones of the face. The biggest advantage of AlterEgo is that it allows users to seamlessly and efficiently interact with computing devices without having to pull out of their current environment, context, or even interfere with their real-world interactions.
AlterEgo's shortcomings are also very obvious. At present, AlterEgo has not yet developed a universal mode that requires users to personalize settings, and is limited by technology and can only recognize 20 words. And its appearance is indeed very ugly, and it takes a lot of courage to take to the streets. At first glance, it always feels like a hearing aid. However, this is also a factor that the researchers did not consider in the development process, and with the development of electrode design, electrobiological models, materials and industrial design, AlterEgo may become very inconspicuous.
The researchers stated that AlterEgo is still in the prototype stage, and it still needs a lot of improvements that will not be brought to market. Currently they are studying general systems that do not require personalization. In the future, AlterEgo may be used by people with language impairments.
