Texas Instruments (TI) announced the availability of the latest reference designs for portable audio, helping portable digital audio manufacturers add new features and further reduce retail prices. The new design to be released is the newest member of the family of portable entertainment reference designs, offering a complete hardware and software solution with a 5 GB 1 inch hard disk (HDD) that supports music as well as JPEG and MPEG. The -4 format allows consumers to realize the dream of carrying all digital music and photos with them at a moderate price.

This turnkey design uses TI's advanced digital audio digital signal processor (DSP) and analog technology to accelerate the development of portable audio jukeboxes, which retail for less than $250 and can be powered on a single battery. In the case of continuous work for 15 hours. This design allows manufacturers to not only integrate audio and imaging capabilities on a color LCD display, but also provide video playback at QCIF resolution, all in a compact, ultra-small form factor. Due to its small size and light weight, it fits perfectly into your shirt pocket. In addition, this programmable platform enables OEMs to change the multimedia standards in the software without having to redesign the product.

This low-power, high-performance DSP not only supports real-time processing of audio files and DRM technology, but also provides OEMs with a broad development space to help them take advantage of enhanced features to make their products unique. In addition, the new reference design integrates TI analog and power management technologies to provide broad support for a wide range of features and functions, including:

• Comprehensive driver and API code to support Seagate 1" 5 GB drives;
• MPEG-4 playback;
• JPEG decoding function, which can simultaneously decode audio for “music slideshow”;
• USB 2.0 device support and USB host support, which allows easy connection to a computer, while the latter enables file sharing and direct image transfer between portable products;
• High-quality time-scale modification (TSM) algorithm that doubles the playback of recorded sounds or slows playback halfway while maintaining a normal pitch;
• Color LCD and extensive multi-language support with a customizable user interface;
• Support for Microsoft's Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology;
• A specially optimized power supply supports long-term MP3 playback – a single built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery can last up to 15 hours;
• Flexible DSP solutions that enable OEMs to add post-processing capabilities or integrate other new features into portable digital audio players;
• Integrated FM tuner with automatic scanning;
• Highly optimized audio track and database cache to simplify user content management and navigation;
• All major digital audio algorithms, including Windows Media Audio (WMA) encoding and decoding, MP3 and recording, and built-in FM receiver.

TI's new portable audio player reference design and complete manufacturing kit are available now and can be ordered through TI and third-party partners. MPEG-4, WMA encoding, DRM and USB host support are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2005.
