Philips Electronics Inc. (Philips) today introduced a system-in-package (SiP) that enables mobile TV in the fourth quarter of 2005. Based on the DVB-H standard, the solution integrates all the features of a complete digital TV receiver into a space that is only nail-sized. It helps consumers access TV shows, pictures, movies and music in real time on the road. From February 14th to 17th, Philips demonstrated its technological advantages in the field of DVB-H at booth #1 of Hall 1 of the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France.

To promote the development of mobile TV, Philips will launch a small system demonstration board in the second quarter of 2005 to support mobile phone manufacturers to participate in the next phase of DVB-H testing. A complete SiP for DVB-H that will reduce board space and reduce power consumption will also be introduced. The reduction in power consumption means that consumers can watch TV for more than 10 hours without charging the phone, and the small chip is easier to integrate into the phone. Operators can use DVB-H to broadcast software for many mobile phones at the same time, that is, after the mobile phone is sold, additional applications can be added to increase revenue.

In addition, Philips has partnered with Silicon & Software Systems (S3) to integrate its onHandTV software into this solution to provide advanced DVB-H compliant products complementing Philips' SiP. As part of the partnership agreement, S3 will join Philips' Nexperia(tm) Partner Program, which enables independent software vendors (ISVs) and integrators to provide middleware, applications and applications based on the Philips Nexperia(tm) family of semiconductor solutions. Reference design.

To improve the consumer's mobile TV experience, Philips Software also offers full support for H.264 video and AAC audio applications for high quality viewing/listening. It also features world-leading picture and audio-enhanced IP capabilities from Philips' proven consumer electronics products, including natural dynamic scanning for smooth viewing of images and "smart color formation" for fascinating LCD displays. These high-performance features will play an important role in creating sustainable consumer demand for mobile TV services.

Philips is the first semiconductor supplier to collaborate with content and mobile industry leaders in mobile TV trials as part of Philips' BMCO project in Berlin. The project uses DVB-H to broadcast traditional TV research and design innovative interactive content for mobile phones and portable digital TV platforms. The test not only uses this technology, but also focuses on the user's acceptance of the service. The results show that the services provided are widely used and recognized by participants, whether at home, on the road or in the office. A total of 512 users participated in the survey, of which 78% thought mobile TV is a very good idea, and 82% are willing to pay for content.

About DVB-H
DVB-H is a system based on DVB-T for transmitting data (usually digital multimedia data) in the form of IP packets. To reduce the power consumption of small handheld device devices, DVB-H uses "time slicing" technology, where IP packets are transmitted in a "data burst" manner during a short period of time. The front end of the receiver exchange will only be turned on during the selected service period. During this very short period of time, data is received at high speed and stored in the device's buffer memory. The buffer memory can store downloaded content and can also be played in real time.
