OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has introduced the new LED, the Oslon Black Flat, for automotive headlamp systems. This LED product belongs to the famous Oslon black series, which uses state-of-the-art chip and packaging technology and is equipped with a ceramic converter, which is a high-performance automotive lighting source. It provides high light output even at high currents, and it also features uniform light distribution, good heat resistance and strong contrast between light and dark. The prototype version of the Oslon Black Flat LED debuted at the 2011 International Automotive Lighting Symposium (ISAL), and its commercial version is now available.
The light source of the headlamp must be versatile. They not only reliably illuminate the road ahead in rainy and foggy weather and nighttime, but also act as low beam lights, turn signals and fog lights. At the same time, they must also be able to withstand the high temperatures in the headlights. For these reasons, more and more automakers tend to choose flexible, efficient and powerful LED technology. In response to these demands, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has specially designed the Oslon Black Flat LED to add a new member to its Oslon Black Series.
High luminous flux can also be output at high temperatures
The Oslon Black Flat includes a UX:3 chip to ensure high light output at high temperatures. When the power consumption is 2.3 W and the operating current is 700 mA, its typical luminous flux is up to 200 lm (at 25 °C); when the operating current is 1.2 A, even if the internal application temperature of the chip is as high as 100 °C, 270 can still be realized. Lum's luminous flux.
With this LED, thermal management becomes a breeze. This is mainly due to its luminous flux that maintains high thermal stability under "high temperature" applications and its new temperature-optimized packaging process. This means that the typical thermal resistance is reduced to 4 K/W. The thermal expansion coefficient of the Oslon Black Flat LED's black QFN package (square flat no lead) matches the expansion factor of the metal core. All of these attributes make the Oslon Black Flat extremely stable and durable (700 mA at current and over 100,000 hours at 60 °C).
Create high quality light and improve visibility
The Oslon Black Flat LED was developed by engineers in Regensburg, Germany. Since it is not necessary to mount a secondary lens, it emits light that is extremely close to the light guide plate or lens. Its illuminance (that is, the brightness of a particular plane seen by the human eye) reaches 70 to 100 Mcd/m2 (million cd/m2), which is 2 to 5 times higher than other LEDs of the same class. Mr. Peter Knittl, Director of Automotive LEDs at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors in Germany, stated: “This is very important for projection system-based automotive headlamp solutions. The higher the illumination of the LED, the more external lenses are required. Small, the less space is occupied, the headlights are thus made smaller, giving the designer more freedom."
With advanced packaging technology, the chip is placed directly in the package, enabling clear light/dark boundaries to be created in the light pattern, resulting in a uniform light distribution across the road surface and a very good contrast ratio.
These characteristics of the Oslon Black Flat, especially its low thermal resistance and excellent performance under extreme conditions, have aroused strong repercussions in the industry. Mr. Peter Knittl added: “Before the end of 2012, cars and motorcycles with this compact black LED as the core light source for the headlamps are expected to be on the road.â€
