Before the final result of the law is announced, LG and Samsung have stopped fighting over OLED patented technology. The two companies said on the 23rd that they will withdraw all patent litigation and patent invalidation judgments against the liquid crystal (LCD) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) filed against each other.
Since September last year, LGD (LG Display, a panel company under the LG Group) has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, claiming that its five products, including Galaxy S series smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablets, have violated its own patents on OLED technology. In November last year, Samsung filed a lawsuit against LGD, demanding that the latter's 7 patents on OLED panel technology be invalid, and the patent dispute between the two lasted 11 months.
Filed a lawsuit, claiming that its five products, including the Galaxy S series of smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablets, infringed its own OLED technology patents. Last year, Samsung and LG, both South Korean companies, converged on home appliances, mobile phone products and panel business, which also made the competition between them more fierce. However, in the past two years, Samsung ’s mobile phone and home appliance products Has a higher market share than LG. LG's panel business has been ranked first in the world, which is a strong weight to compete with Samsung.
However, since Samsung acquired a 3% stake in Sharp for 110 million US dollars in March of this year and gained cooperation with Sharp Panel, it has also strengthened Samsung and LG's confidence in fighting for the top spot in the global display market.
Compared with ordinary LCD screens, OLED panels support thinner designs and more vivid images, which has led to the use of this new technology by TV manufacturers after mobile phone companies have widely used OLED screens.
"OLED is the product closest to the dream of display." Lee Kyungshik, vice president of Samsung's TV business, once said to the outside world. LG is also full of confidence in OLED technology, "only two companies in the world can produce large-size OLED TVs: Samsung and LG." LG TV business director Jang Moon-ik also said.
In an interview with Tencent Technology, Li Yaqin, research director of Qunzhi Consulting, believes that OLED is an advantage field that Korean manufacturers believe can achieve the commanding heights of the future display technology, and the speed of domestic manufacturers is now catching up.
More importantly, Samsung and LG's common competitors, Panasonic and Sony, have already formed alliances on OLED TVs. Both parties have disclosed that they will jointly develop or produce OLED TVs in the future. At this year's CES2013 US Consumer Electronics Show, Sony and Panasonic both unveiled 56-inch OLED TVs.
But this does not mean that LG and Samsung have completely ended their competition on OLED. On September 13, LG Electronics announced the first LG curved OLED TV in China. This TV body is about 4.3mm thick, only 16.3kg, and is said to be 47% lighter than Samsung curved OLED TV. Only two days later, Samsung secretly competed with LG, and the price of its 55-inch OLED TV released in China was directly reduced to 54999 yuan, 5,000 yuan lower than LG ’s same TV.
Therefore, the battle between Samsung and LG in OLED technology is far from over, and has just begun.
