Intel plans to invest $8 billion to build and transform chip factory in 2 years

Intel disclosed on October 19th local time that it plans to invest 6 billion to 8 billion U.S. dollars in the next two years to build a new processor plant in Oregon and transform the existing four plants to use 22nm process to produce processor chips.

The 22nm processor will be used in smart phones, digital cameras, desktops, notebooks and other products. The small size and high performance of the chip will enable equipment manufacturers to produce thin, high performance and longer battery life products.

Intel said that the five projects will require about 6,000 to 8,000 construction workers and create 800 to 1,000 high-tech jobs. Although 75% of Intel’s revenue comes from overseas markets, about 75% of processors are produced in the United States.

Intel CEO and President Paul Otellini said in a statement, “The five projects we announced today show that Moore’s Law will enter a new stage of development. The most direct impact of our multi-billion dollar investment will be Thousands of construction jobs and new high-tech jobs since then."
