[PConline News] Virtual reality glasses are still very hot now, but the current stage of development is limited to the thing worn on the head. Glasses itself is almost all (except for HTC Vive), and there is no very vivid interactive experience. . Obviously, for real virtual reality, at least we should have an interaction with our hands, and at least a natural one.
Oculus is one of the pioneers in the field of VR. They are working with the University of Washington to develop a magnet + sensor input device. This magnet + sensor design allows users to interact with the virtual world more directly with their hands and fingers, rather than using other bizarre things such as gloves, joysticks and the like.
In fact, there are many different input device schemes in the VR field, but at present, it seems that none of them are truly comfortable and natural. Most of them are gamepads designed for games, like the Gamepad, and there are limits to the range of motion of such control devices.
The project that Oculus and University of Washington collaborated with is called Finexus. Using the size of a fingernail, the magnet can be placed on the tip of the fingertip to determine the exact position of the finger in 3D space. It is said that the precision of this magnet can reach a maximum of 1.3mm, and There is no need for a camera sensor to lock it in sight, and the user can manipulate it in any position.
This may become a revolutionary product for virtual reality input devices: this device of the Finexus project is divided into two parts, where the electromagnetic part is placed on the finger, and the other part of the wristband or smart watch will contain sensors inside. There is a need for a space between the sensor and the magnet, which is currently possible to achieve a 12cm pitch, which is expected to expand to 25cm in the future. The limitation is that the two parts must be close to each other.
The project was initiated by Keyu Chen of the University of Washington and he was an intern at Oculus Research. Researchers at Oculus and the University of Washington are still working on this project and the results are expected to be presented at ACM CHI 2016 next May.
