Sony has released three series of eight models of the LCD TV "BRAVIA" that supports three-dimensional (3D) image display. The three series "HX900", "HX800" and "LX900" use white LEDs in the backlight source of the LCD panel. Regarding the configuration of the LED backlight, the HX900 series is a "straight down" type arranged on the back of the panel, and the HX800 and LX900 series are "edge-illuminated type" arranged on the side of the panel.
The HX900 series uses a structure in which a plurality of white LEDs are integrated into one unit and arranged in a block shape on the back of the panel (Fig. 1, Fig. 2). The principle is that the light-emitting portion of the white LED is arranged in parallel with the panel, and the optical member such as a light guide plate is used to illuminate the back surface of the panel. “This is a structure in which a plurality of edge-lit LED backlights are arranged longitudinally†(the company's commentator). According to the introduction, by adopting such a structure, the thickness can be reduced as compared with the conventional direct type LED backlight in which the LED light emitting portion and the panel are vertically arranged. In addition, the illumination of the LED backlight is controlled in units of cells according to the input signal, and the contrast can also be improved. However, the number of controls and the number of white LEDs equipped are "inconvenient to answer" (the company's commentator).
The HX800 series is equipped with a white LED backlight that is edge-lit but can be partially illuminated (Figure 3, Figure 4). This is a product developed by Sony itself. The method is implemented by arranging a plurality of white LEDs on a straight line on the upper and lower sides of the panel, and controlling the illumination of each of the upper and lower white LEDs according to the input signal. In terms of the number of ranges that can be controlled, “the vertical direction is two directions, but the lateral direction is inconvenient to answer. However, the number is less than 10 and cannot be precisely controlled like a direct-type LED backlight†(the company's commentator). The number of white LEDs and optical components are “compared to the 'BRAVIA EX700' series released in January 2010†(the company's commentator). In addition, Sanken Electric and Taiwan Chi Mei Electronics are promoting the development of white LED backlights that can control local illumination.
The LX900 series uses a common edge-lit LED backlight that is not partially illuminated. Both the HX900 series and the LX900 series use a newly developed resin between the LCD panel section and the surface glass panel, and then an integrated "OptiContrast panel" (Fig. 5). By achieving integration, reflection of external light and backlight can be suppressed as compared with a method of placing an air layer between the liquid crystal panel and the glass substrate. In addition, an AR (anti-reflection) film is also used on the surface of the glass substrate.
