New software package for integration with multiple in-vehicle systems
Tokyo, Japan, April 4, 2017 - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), the world's leading semiconductor solutions provider, today announced the launch of a new software package for R-Car automotive computing platforms to enhance next-generation networks Functional safety and network security of the car. The software package enables optimized embedded virtualization technology that enables embedded systems to have security features that protect the car from external threats in a single system, as well as functional safety features that ensure the car continues to operate safely even in the event of a failure.

Functional safety is a top priority for the automotive industry. Automotive systems, including cloud connectivity systems, dashboards and driver monitoring, are expanding year by year in number and size. In addition, new user experience requirements such as multi-screen sharing of information and multi-system control are increasing. These trends have led to an increasing expectation of automotive system integration. For instrument panel and driver monitoring, even in the event of a fault, it is necessary to support functional safety for safe handling of the vehicle.
Network security is another key issue. For example, the current car is moving towards the network car, allowing applications to be downloaded from the open cloud to update and upgrade the car software, so car network security becomes a priority. Security features need to be added to protect cars from malicious attacks on the network and to protect personal information processed in the cloud. The cloud service application must be separated from the dashboard to prevent important information from being lost or corrupted.
At the same time, the car cockpit environment is ready to evolve into a multi-system automotive computing system to provide a more consistent and more advanced user experience. The network security and functional security features previously implemented in multiple systems are now implemented in a single system, which presents new integration challenges for depots and Tier 1 suppliers.
To address these issues, Renesas Electronics offers several new software packages that integrate multiple automotive systems in a single R-Car platform, including systems that require network security and functional safety features:
1. Virtualization software package that allows multiple operating systems (OS) to be integrated at the same time and can run multiple different applications on a single R-Car system to enhance system integration.
2. Security packs that enable secure boot and security updates and other features to meet changing security requirements.
3. A functional safety package that controls the security mechanisms (hardware IP) contained in the R-Car System-on-Chip (SoC).
Renesas and its partner companies offer these packages to Tier 1 suppliers and plan to expand further in the future.
Key features of the new software package: (1) Embedded virtualization technology can integrate multiple systems while supporting functional security and network securityRenesas Electronics' first version of the embedded virtualization hypervisor uses Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY® MulTIvisorTM. This hypervisor allows you to choose the operating system for your application, such as real-time operating system (RTOS), Linux, or AndroidTM. By dividing the system into independent, reliable partitions, you can ensure the level of network security and functional security you need. Different applications can run on a single R-Car platform. For example, Linux and/or Android operating systems can be installed to run applications that require cloud connectivity or navigation, while Green Hills Software INTEGRITY or other real-time operating systems can be installed on the same platform to run software that requires functional security and network security, such as Dashboard and warning tone generator. Low performance degradation enables single system integration on the R-Car platform compared to running these applications on various hardware such as system on chip (SoC) or microcontroller (MCU). Support for other hypervisors will be rolled out in turn.
(2) Security software can implement software security operating environmentNetwork security features are critical to preventing hackers and other cyber attacks. Renesas Electronics offers a variety of software for powerful security functions, such as: Safe Start to prevent modified programs; Security level management functions corresponding to product life; and Trusted Execution Environment. In addition, the new software is also capable of OTA updates, allowing applications and operating systems to be upgraded without the need for the driver to return to the car dealership. Renesas Electronics plans to gradually introduce various security software packages to respond to system architecture and requirements, and to support management procedures.
(3) Functional safety software supports system development in functional safetyFor functional safety, the Renesas R-Car H3 and R-Car M3 SoCs have a variety of hardware IPs to support their security concepts, including the runtime self-test system announced by Renesas Electronics at the International Solid State Circuits Conference ISSCC 2016. This technology implements the necessary diagnostic coverage for functional safety and reduces the interruption of program execution during testing, while using a multi-core CPU to perform a self-test to detect failures. Renesas Electronics supports the development of functionally safe systems by providing control software for this security mechanism.
