Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI)
The DALI standard is a standard developed for electronic ballast communication and is used for standard components and simple wiring (ie low cost applications). This two-way digital protocol is similar to a 0 to 10V interface and requires a two-wire connection system, but provides the addressability of a single or batch of lamps in a single bus configuration. The application area of DALI is to adjust the light and preset the values of different lighting environments, and adjust the lighting settings according to the sunshine direction and energy saving factors.
DALI is based on the principle of master-slave, that is, the user can operate the system through the host controller and send information including addresses and commands to all ballasts (slave). The address determines whether the ballast should obey the command. Each ballast is digitally addressed and therefore not sensitive to electromagnetic noise. In LED lighting systems, LED drivers are slaves. The figure shows a low-power DALI interface circuit in which the microcontroller acts as a slave to the host control system (ballast controller or LED driver).
