Protocol converter principle

The protocol converter, referred to as the protocol conversion, is also called the interface converter. It can make the hosts that use different high-level protocols on the communication network still cooperate with each other to complete various distributed applications. It works at the transport layer or higher. The interface protocol converter can generally be completed with an ASIC chip, which has low cost and small size. It can convert between IEEE802.3 protocol Ethernet or V.35 data interface and 2G interface of standard G.703 protocol. Can also be in the 232/485/422 serial port and E1, CAN interface and 2M interface for conversion.

With the rapid development of computer network technology, a large number of diverse network systems have been established, which has brought about a problem of how to interconnect various networks. One approach is to implement international standards. The 051 network architecture and international standards for communication protocols have become more and more mature. However, to transform a large number of existing non-051 networks into 051 systems, standard protocols are used, and there are many difficulties. Moreover, network technologies are constantly developing and diversifying at the same time as standardization. The interconnected communications of the network will probably never be avoided. On this basis, a protocol converter was proposed.

definition

Protocol conversion is a kind of mapping, which is to map the sequence of sending and receiving information (or events) of a certain protocol to the sequence of sending and receiving information of another protocol. The information that needs to be mapped is important information, so the protocol conversion can be seen as a mapping between the important information of the two protocols. The so-called important information and non-important information are relative. According to the specific needs to be determined, select different important information for mapping, will get different converters.

Industrial communication requires information sharing and data exchange between multiple devices. Common industrial equipment communication ports include RS-232, RS-485, CAN, and networks. Because of the different interface protocols, the operations between heterogeneous networks are implemented. Information exchange is difficult to implement. Through multi-protocol converters, different interface devices can be networked to achieve interoperability between devices. Based on a variety of communication ports and various protocols, a wide variety of protocol converters are formed. The main categories are E1/Ethernet protocol converters, RS-232/485/422/CAN converters/RS-232/485/CAN converters.
