Wal-Mart Launches Store 8 Technology Business Incubator to Acquire Spatialand to Create VR Platform

The team developed and developed virtual reality products through an immersive retail environment and applied them to all aspects of Wal-Mart, online and offline.

Large retail giant Wal-Mart launched the Store 8 technology startup incubator last year to research and invest in emerging technologies such as AR/VR. Now, Store 8 has acquired a startup called SpaTIaland, which has created a platform and toolset for enterprise companies to create VR content.

According to a blog post by Wal-Mart, KaTIe Finnegan will serve as the interim CEO of SpaTIaland in addition to being the chief and founder of Store 8.

Last year, SpaTIaland initially partnered with Store 8 to create a VR event for the Wal-Mart incubator, Innov8, which the company said was the proof of what they believe is a virtual reality experience that “there may be millions of people shopping in the future.”

Finnegan told us that the new company will work with Spatialand's Kim Cooper and Store 8 consultant Jeremy Welt. As co-founder Finnegan, the team will "develop and explore virtual reality new product uses through an immersive retail environment and integrate it into all aspects of Wal-Mart's online and offline."

Kim - Cooper is a two-time Emmy nominee. Under her leadership, Spatialand's VR platform has created projects for Oculus, Intel, Reebok and Linkin Park.

VR Strategy and Product Consultant Jeremy Welt helped launch YouTube's first commercial deal to help Walt Disney acquire Maker Studios. He is also a consultant for 360 video applications Splash and Mindshow (VR film production tools).
