Luminar launches a cheap version of the lidar

According to foreign media reports, LuminarTechnologies Inc. announced that it is launching a cheap version of the laser radar. After the capacity increase, the company will provide such core components to the car companies.

The startup has released a new sensor platform on April 12 that has reduced the cost of the most expensive components from tens of thousands of dollars to $3, allowing Luminar's lidar equipment to be sold in bulk to corporate customers.

The technology uses short-wave laser pulses to better detect targets around the vehicle, and its picture clarity is much higher than that captured by radar equipment. It is worth mentioning that Luminar aims to compete with Velodyne Lidar.

Luminar also announced that the company has acquired a Black Forest Engineering Company, a Colorado Springs-based chip designer that reduces its R&D costs. According to AusTIn Russell, CEO of the company, by the end of the year, the company has increased its Lidar production capacity to 5,000 manufacturing facilities in Orlando, Florida. In comparison, the total output in 2017 was only 100.

Russell declined to disclose the specific price of Luminar's laser sensors, but said its internal production costs are higher. If mass production is achieved, the price will drop to less than $1,000 per unit. The company is also working with Toyota and deploying its sensors to Toyota's autonomous driving test fleet.

Luminar claims that the company raised $36 million in funding last year, mainly from three investors, including the 1517 Fund, which was provided by billionaire Peter Thiel. Partially supported by a venture capital firm.

Luminar recruited 200 employees last year and some were added to the Orlando plant. The company also recruited several executives from Harman InternaTIonal Industries Inc. and Motorola SoluTIons Inc.
