Drone Power Line Inspection System Upgrade!

Ensuring the safety of power grids involves regular inspections of tree barriers. The integration of UAVs with advanced data processing software offers a highly efficient way to conduct these inspections. Aerospace Vision has made significant strides with its innovative photogrammetry technology. In 2015, they launched the first-generation UAV power line inspection system, PowerMatrix V1.0. This system, built around a fixed-wing UAV equipped with a digital camera, uses photogrammetry technology along with a ground-based data processing platform to digitally reconstruct power line channels and quantify obstacles within them. After nearly two years of practical application and testing, PowerMatrix V1.0 gained user approval and praise, yet it encountered several challenges. (1) While the fixed-wing UAV allows for efficient image capture, it poses operational difficulties and requires specific landing sites, which limits its usability. (2) Many inspection teams already use multi-rotor UAVs with experienced flight crews. There’s a need to leverage the potential of these rotary-wing drones in power line inspections to enhance equipment utilization. (3) To achieve precise tree barrier inspections, ground control points must be set up, complicating learning processes, extending training periods, and increasing operator workload, thereby hindering inspection efficiency. (4) The spatial location of wires depends entirely on manual measurement, which, while accurate, is labor-intensive and calls for higher automation levels. In response to these challenges, the Aerospace Vision R&D team has spent a year developing the upgraded PowerMatrix V2.0 UAV power line inspection system. Here are its key features and benefits: 01
Full Support for Fixed-Wing and Multi-Rotor Drones

The fixed-wing UAV, previously requiring catapult launch and parachute landing, now features vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, reducing operational demands and making deployment easier. It also supports multi-rotor drones, including popular models like DJI’s "Mavic" and "Phantom". Drone Power Line Inspection System Upgrade!

PowerMatrix V2.0 supports both fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones, combining the speed and endurance of fixed-wing UAVs with the maneuverability of multi-rotors. This dual capability allows for high-efficiency inspections over long distances and flexible operations using existing equipment and teams. 02
High-Precision 3D Reconstruction Without Ground Control Points

PowerMatrix V2.0 employs beam method regional network adjustment technology, treating UAV GPS data as aerial control points, enabling high-precision 3D reconstruction of power line channels without the need for ground control points. Unlike traditional methods that require additional fieldwork, this system automates manual interpretation, transforming qualitative inspections into quantitative ones with just one software installation. By eliminating the need for ground control points, the training process is streamlined, improving inspection efficiency, and delivering tree barrier measurement results comparable to conventional methods. 03
Computer-Aided Automatic/Semi-Automatic Power Line Measurements

Wire position measurements have transitioned from fully manual to computer-aided automatic/semi-automatic systems. Computer-assisted automatic power line feature detection, guided by manual input, significantly boosts measurement efficiency. The high-precision wire detection algorithm ensures automatic measurement results match or surpass manual accuracy, minimizing human error impacts. Drone Power Line Inspection System Upgrade!

The UAV power line inspection system exemplifies advancements in efficiency, precision, and ease of use since its inception. Over the past two years, PowerMatrix has expanded its support, simplified operations, and delivered more reliable services. Aerospace Vision remains committed to its core philosophy of "measuring the world and operating the future," adhering to industry trends, and offering top-tier services rooted in professionalism and dedication.
