Global Network Technology Report – According to recent foreign media reports on September 25, Samsung Electronics has taken another significant step in the field of artificial intelligence by establishing a new AI laboratory in Montreal, Canada. The facility, set up by the Samsung Institute of Advanced Technology (SAIT), marks the company's continued investment in cutting-edge research and development.
The Montreal AI lab was launched in August and is focused on advancing core algorithms in key areas such as robotics, autonomous systems, language translation, and speech and image recognition. It brings together top researchers from SAIT, including Korean experts, as well as renowned AI figures like Professor Yoshua Bengio, a leading authority in deep learning. This collaboration highlights Samsung’s commitment to building a strong foundation in AI technology.
Samsung stated that the AI labs will work closely with leading research institutions to develop components for these core algorithms. As part of its broader strategy, SAIT is responsible for exploring technologies that could be commercialized within the next five to ten years. For example, Samsung has already developed cadmium-free quantum dots and integrated them into its flagship television models. The company is also working on AI-powered smart speakers, which are expected to launch next year. Additionally, by 2020, all of Samsung’s home appliance lines will be equipped with AI capabilities, enhancing user experience through smarter automation.
In further expansion of its AI ecosystem, Samsung has partnered with Kakao, one of South Korea’s largest online messaging platforms. This partnership aims to integrate AI-driven features into chat services, improving personalization and efficiency for users. As the tech industry continues to evolve rapidly, Samsung’s move into Montreal underscores its strategic focus on global AI talent and innovation.
