The world's first automated driving test highway was founded in Michigan

On April 11, according to foreign media reports, the American Mobile Center (ACM) has just established a self-driving highway test department in Michigan. This controversial time node is likely to determine the future development of autonomous driving technology.

The U.S. Mobile Center is a Michigan-based non-profit testing agency focused on the research, testing and development of self-driving cars. In order to continue to improve vehicle safety, the Ministry of Transport, the University of Michigan and other related organizations have jointly established this organization and have received support from major companies in different industries.

In April 2017, the center built a headquarters and testing ground on a 500-acre historic site in Ann Arbor, with a total investment of nearly $135 million. After establishing a highway testing department, automakers can test their own driverless technology while driving at high speeds.

Before this section of the automated driving test highway was opened, several fatal accidents related to the technology had already occurred. A few weeks ago, a Tesla ModelX owner was still involved in a traffic accident when he started Autopilot and died. On the other side in Tempe, Arizona, Uber’s automated driving test vehicle also killed a cycling pedestrian.

The center's chief executive, John Maddox, emphasized the importance of automated vehicle testing. "What happened in Tempe more clearly shows that these technologies still need to be further developed and improved. Providing relevant testing facilities is crucial for autonomous driving technology," Maddox said.

As the world’s first automated driving test highway, this section is 4 kilometers in length, allowing automakers to test self-driving cars at a speed of at least 105 kilometers per hour. At the same time, ramps and non-ramp sections were also provided in the test site, and there was a 213-meter curved tunnel to test the performance of the self-driving car in the event of loss of connection with satellite signals.

The U.S. Mobile Center’s facilities can also be tested under winter conditions, and even simulate different road conditions such as construction sites and railroad tracks. In the highway test section, it is possible to carry out curve tests at different speeds, such as 64 km/h and 80 km/h, to observe the performance and handling of test vehicles under high-speed turning conditions.

The opening of the autopilot test highway signifies that the proving ground has entered a new phase. By 2019, the U.S. Mobile Center will also establish a simulated urban area that will include residents' streets, bicycle lanes, circular lanes, intersections, and pedestrians.
