What should I do if I find that AHCI forgot to open after the system is completed?

In the previous issue, Zhijun Middle East introduced the three major inspection items for solid-state drives after they are obtained: SATA interface, 4K alignment and AHCI opening. Today, let's talk about what to do if you find that AHCI forgot to open after the system is completed.

What is AHCI?

AHCI is a SATA working mode switch in the computer BIOS, including advanced features of SATA interfaces such as NCQ. Computers in the past two years have already turned on AHCI mode, but older computer hosts may use IDE as the default setting for compatibility reasons.

AHCI settings are located in different locations in the BIOS settings of different computers, but as long as you can find SATA-related settings, you are almost in the right place.

AHCI is not turned on properly

If the AHCI mode is not turned on, but the operating system is installed in the IDE mode, the problem can be found through the ASSSDBenchmark: first, the pciide – BAD red words will appear, and the 4K-64Thrd score will be greatly reduced compared to the normal situation, which is mainly It is because the NCQ function of AHCI is missing in IDE mode.

Although IDE mode has a huge impact on performance, using IDE mode does not affect the normal operation of the Trim feature of SSDs. If your computer is too old to support AHCI at all, it will not affect the normal operation of the solid state drive.

How to enable AHCI mode losslessly:

Although it only takes a few seconds to switch from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS, if you directly modify it in this way, Windows will not be able to boot normally. Next, Toshiba-kun will tell you a little trick to enable AHCI without reinstalling the system.

Type regedit in the Start Menu - Run and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

expand sequentially

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices

Look under it for Msahci or IastorV, find its Start item, change the value to 0 and click OK. Finally, close the registry editor and restart the computer. By the way, enter the BIOS settings and change the SATA working mode to AHCI. After saving, exiting and restarting, Windows can successfully complete the boot in AHCI mode.

The above method only applies to Windows 7 and Windows Vista. As for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems, you should modify another location in the registry: in the registry editor

expand sequentially

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesstorahci

Delete the StartOverride item under it, then exit the registry editor and restart, and modify the BIOS settings to enable AHCI mode.

Depending on the driver version used, you may also need to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesiaStorSV

and the StartOverride item under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesiaStorV (if it exists).

After the above modifications, the AHCI mode can be enabled without reinstalling the operating system. After the AHCI mode is turned on, the performance of the SSD will be significantly improved.
