ON Semiconductor Introduces Constant Current Regulator NSI50350A

ON Semiconductor Introduces Constant Current Regulator NSI50350A ON Semiconductor has expanded the constant current flow regulator (CCR) lineup and introduced the NSI50350A. This simple and rugged device is designed to provide high thermal efficiency and cost-effective options for passive/discrete components or driver integrated circuit (IC) solutions used to stabilize the flow of light emitting diodes (LEDs). A variety of 1-watt (W) lighting applications, including architectural lighting and signage.

The NSI50350A CCR incorporates self-biased transistor (SBT) technology to stabilize the current over a wide voltage range. Its design incorporates a built-in LED driver that provides a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) feature that protects the LED from thermal runaway under extreme voltage and current conditions. 350mA (mA) ±10% steady-state current regulation (Ireg) is ideal for driving 1.0(W) LEDs; for 2.0W LED applications, two NSI50350A CCRs can be placed in parallel. The device has an operating temperature range of −55 °C to +175 °C.

Because the NSI50350A does not require the use of external components, it can be designed as a high-side or low-side current regulator. The high rated anode-to-cathode voltage (Vak) of 50 volts (V) maximum allows the device to withstand voltage surges common in automotive, industrial, and commercial signage applications. When only Vak of 0.5 V is applied, the device turns on immediately, reaching 20% of full-scale current.

Dan Huettl, general manager and director of ON Semiconductor's small signal division, said: “Solid-state lighting (SSL) is becoming increasingly popular in different markets such as automobiles, building lighting and signage. It is ensured that LEDs are protected from damage when used in harsh environments. The key to long-term operation. The reliable and easy-to-use single-device solution of this new compact NSI50350A from ON Semiconductor provides engineers with an extremely efficient way to ensure that the LEDs in their applications are protected."

The NSI50350A is packaged in the DPAK-4 (NSI50350AD) or SMC (NSI50350AS) industry-standard package and dissipates 11 W and 5.8 W, respectively.

Both devices pass the automotive industry AEC-Q101 standard and UL94-V0 certification
