Time-lapse photography is a technique that captures an image or video at a lower frame rate and then plays the picture at a normal or faster rate. Usually, in the case of a handheld camera, generally no one can align to the same position, and without the help of a tripod, the combined image not only shakes, but also jumps up and down and left and right. Texas Instruments engineer Thorsten Lorenzen used electronic technology to solve these problems and brought new market opportunities.
Thorsten Lorenzen is using his knowledge and skills in DIY to create a miracle.
All of this was done in his spare time in the studio next to his residence.
The source of the story goes back to last year. An old friend of Thorsten, Maik, is a professional photographer. In an accidental conversation, Maik invited Thorsten to help design a small device that allows him to use his existing equipment for time-lapse photography. For hobbies, Thorsten promised to design a time-lapse photography system for him.
“I have always had a soft spot for designing small embedded systems. I am very excited to be fully committed to the development of a new system, such as technical parameters, concept planning, mechanical structure, PCB design, soldering, programming and testing. Wait," he said. "Designing such a fascinating system has added to my life."
Mechanical slider
Thorsten first built a mechanical slider for the project with a TI DRV8412-C2 motor driver, while attaching a camera to the slider and setting it to move on the slider in a different order. This motor driver allows the camera to stay in precise position as it moves along the slider.
In addition, he also used a C2000 processor in the design and constructed a controller that can activate the camera camera at a specific location.
“Without a mechanical system, it is impossible to achieve time-lapse recording,†he said. “Compared to man-made, this system has more reliable stability in shooting, and it is completely automatic.â€
Thorsten said his photographer friends were shocked by the capabilities that modern technology can achieve, compared to the low-cost systems that can be found on the market.
“Maik especially likes the programmability of the system, because with this feature, he can set it according to different scenarios. He even thinks that this system may bring new market opportunities.†Thorsten said, “in the current market. Photos and video clips in commercial applications such as implantable ads need to be more colorful, thereby attracting the attention of customers and consumers, and more athleticism can add more emotional color to the work."
About Thorsten
Thorsten joined TI 5 years ago and is currently a Senior Field Application Engineer (FAE) in the European Automotive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) business, where he is responsible for vision-based DSP systems and provides advice and advice to clients. Due to frequent travel, he rarely has time to design in the studio of the residence.
“This rare opportunity has given me the opportunity to experience the experience of being a TI customer. I have never worked on motor control in TI,†he said. “With this opportunity, I personally felt how customers are using TI products. To start a new project, this experience is truly unparalleled."
