AIR 063 | Interview with Mr. Wang Tianmiao, a famous professor at Beihang University: The era of innovation and entrepreneurship has arrived.

Professor Wang Tianmiao is a distinguished professor of Cheung Kong Scholarship of the Ministry of Education. He successively obtained a bachelor's degree in master's degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Northwestern Polytechnical University. He later engaged in post-doctoral research in advanced robotics technology at the National Intelligence Technology and Systems Laboratory of Tsinghua University and the Italian National Bionics Mechanics Laboratory. At the CCF-GAIR conference, I was fortunate to have invited Prof. Wang to give a speech on the finale and gave an in-depth interview with Prof. Wang after the meeting.

Question 1: From theory to practice, where do you think the robot will first form a boom?

Professor Wang: Within the next five years, the industry, service industries, and high-end industries such as smart cars and unmanned aerial vehicles may be the first wave of booms. Due to high labor costs and pressure on city life, companies may take the lead in using robots in large quantities. For high-end industries such as automotive, electronics, more imported robots. For processing and handling, there are more domestically produced robots. Its input volume has increased from the previous 20% to 30% to 40% now, and it may reach 60% in the future. At present, domestic domestic robots use a growth rate of 30%, and China's robot use growth rate is 17% worldwide. For the service industry, due to the gradual maturity of artificial intelligence technology and cognitive technology, the future status of robots in banks, families, hospitals, hotels, etc. will gradually increase. For high-end industries such as smart cars and smart drones, the use of robots will also promote the development of the entire society.

Question 2: What are the obstacles to the practice of medical robots?

Professor Wang: Since it involves life, safety issues are indispensable. To ensure safety, qualification certification, model experiments, and animal experiments are required. These steps take a very long period of time. The medical robot is only an aid. It cannot replace a doctor for surgery. It takes 5-10 years for the doctor and robot to work closely together. The research and development of medical robots is very difficult. It is not like industrial robots can be debugged and modified at any time. It requires a longer process.

Question 3: Does the causal relationship between R&D and demand for robots come from the first robot and then the corresponding medical treatment, or does it have medical needs first, and then conduct research and development of the corresponding robot?

Professor Wang: From the perspective of academic research, it is more inclined to study from the composition of the system and various parts. For example, surgical planning has calibration and safety controls. Before experience and technology have yet to shape, it is better to do full-time robots on demand. At present, it is impossible to develop universal medical robots worldwide. Therefore, the corresponding robots should be developed on demand.

Question 4: Please briefly explain which institutions are currently doing a good job in health care.

Professor Wang: Currently, Da Vinci does a good job in software medical robots around the world. Israeli ReWalk medical robots have been on the market in the United States, and French medical robot ROSA has done a very good job. In China, Tianzhi Hang’s orthopaedic robots are doing very well and have obtained licenses. They also have the Remebot telemedicine robot, which is mainly engaged in brain positioning. Currently, it has conducted clinical trials in more than 20 hospitals. In terms of artificial limbs, some laboratories of Peking University and Shanghai Jiaotong University are doing very well.
