Sometimes, our small partners take the company’s test devices home. Yesterday, one of the company’s 8P devices suddenly malfunctioned. After entering the lock screen password, it kept showing an error message. The fingerprints that were previously registered no longer worked at all.
At that moment, we all helped the person out and quickly reached out to a colleague on WeChat. I felt a bit embarrassed at the time and asked, “Are you sure you entered the wrong password?†She said no, that she had used it just in the morning and it was working fine. But now, the device had a password she couldn’t remember. She asked if I could remind her for five minutes, but after trying for an hour, it still didn’t work.
After checking the situation, I noticed that several iPhones from other team members were experiencing the same issue—sudden lock screen password failures and fingerprint recognition not working. It looked like a widespread problem. According to what I read online, the only solution was to "brick" the device using a tool like iTunes.
The next day, the sister contacted Apple directly and explained the issue. The customer service rep told her that the only way to resolve this was through iTunes. There was no alternative. Then, with the help of Apple Certified Engineer Wang Jinwei, they investigated the cause of the issue.
Wang Jinwei explained that the problem was likely due to a system vulnerability, similar to the iOS 11 bug that affected many users before. Any compatible device could be affected, regardless of model. The only fix was to use iTunes to restore the device.
When the sister connected the 8P to iTunes, the software failed to recognize the device. At that point, she had to force the iPhone into recovery mode and then perform a full restore.
Here's how to enter recovery mode:
- For iPhone models below 7/7P: Press and hold the power button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.
- For iPhone 7/7P: Press and hold the power button and the volume down button until the Apple logo appears.
- For iPhone 8, 8P, X: Quickly press and release the volume up, then quickly press and release the volume down, then long-press the power button until the Apple logo appears.
To restore the device via iTunes:
Make sure your iTunes is updated to the latest version. Open iTunes, go to Help > Check for Updates. If it prompts you to update, click OK. Once updated, connect the iPhone to your computer. iTunes will prompt you to update or restore the device. Click "Restore."
Then, follow the on-screen instructions. You’ll need to agree to the terms and wait about 30 minutes while the device downloads and installs the firmware.
Once the process is complete, an activation lock screen will appear. Enter your Apple ID and password to continue.
When the device restarts and shows the “Hello†screen, it means the restore was successful. Unplug the cable, set up the phone again, and reset your lock screen password.
But here’s a crucial reminder: Before performing a restore, make sure to turn off "Find My iPhone." If you forget your Apple ID or password, the device won’t activate. Also, keep in mind that restoring the device will erase all data. So, always back up your iPhone regularly to avoid losing important information.
