Intel Yang Xu: Industry chain vertically integrated computing power dominates the future of smartphones

Yang Xu, Vice President of Intel Corporation and President of China

At present, the intelligent revolution characterized by personalized Internet is sweeping the world, which will generate huge computing demand. Computing power will dominate the future of smart phones, and computing innovation has unlimited potential.

We believe that what users need in the future is the "connected computing" experience, which is highly intelligent, consistent, proactive, safe and reliable. The Intel architecture will provide the required computing performance across devices, and the millions of applications previously developed for the Intel architecture will also be extended to mobile devices such as smartphones.

Taking mobile internet as the cornerstone of strategy

In early 2012, the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showed the world's first Intel-based smartphone-Lenovo K800. I was fortunate to get a first trial, and I felt that the experience was beyond imagination. Not only can high-definition pictures and videos be comparable to popular smartphones in the market, but they can also run 3D games very well. When I took the K800 to share the experience with my family and friends, everyone was very pleasantly surprised.

Intel is synonymous with computing power. Computing power that was previously felt only on PCs can now be experienced through smartphones. This is one of the main differentiating characteristics of Intel compared to the past.

The smartphone business is a new territory for Intel. Intel regards smartphones as an important personalized computing platform, and also knows that transistors are the most important driving force for game-changing in the field of computing. Although some people have questioned before, Intel has reduced power consumption while trying to maintain the traditional performance and quality advantages. It is expected that the increase in computing power will bring the development of smartphone applications and experiences into a new era.

From the Global Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to the recent World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC), Intel has further expanded its smartphone product line and customer ecosystem. There are quite a few partners who believe in the advantages of Intel ’s product performance, the speed and ability of innovation. Following Lenovo and Motorola (microblogging), Intel announced new strategic cooperation with Orange, the largest mobile operator in Britain and France, Lava, India ’s fastest-growing mobile phone manufacturer, and Visa, the world ’s leading payment brand. In particular, it also announced a partnership with ZTE ( Weibo) plans to jointly promote smartphones during the year.

The reason why smart phones are called "smart" is because of their excellent computing power. In addition to 10% of smartphone applications related to voice calls, 90% of other activities including e-mail, Internet surfing, shopping, posting on Weibo, taking photos, watching videos, 3D games, etc., require strong computing power.

This explains why Intel has entered the field of smartphones and is committed to using the latest computing platform to enhance the consumer experience.

In the previous strategic adjustment, Intel redefines the concept of PC, from Personal Coum-puter (personal computer) to Personal CompuTIng (personalized computing), and from a single chip design and manufacturing to a chip, platform, software and application Innovation.

This means that Intel's entire strategy will be based on the Internet, while constantly innovating in the manufacturing process. Maybe next year, mobile phones will use 22-nanometer 3D transistors. Our future direction is such a technology. It not only provides traditional computers, notebooks, and desktops, but also has products like mobile phones and tablet computers.

On April 23, Intel released the third-generation smart core chip, which marked the 22-nanometer era of the entire semiconductor industry. Imagine integrating 200 million 14-nanometer transistors on a pin-tip plane. The design of the 3D chip can achieve a performance improvement of more than 30%, while saving 50% of the power at the same performance. Support, what innovations and changes this will bring to mobile devices.

This is exactly what Intel is good at. In 2013, the 14-nanometer system-on-chip technology will reach an absolute leading level in terms of process.
