It is a flat pentagon device that can be implanted under the skin of the user's hand and powered by the body. Currently UnderSkin is still a concept, but New Deal Design believes that smart digital tattoo products will become a reality in the next five years.

"It might offer some of the more common features," Yoo said, such as turning on smart door locks, paying, or tracking basic health data. However, the concept of tattoos is also exciting, and they are developing an "enhanced identity" framework. Yoo gave a few examples. When you hold your wife's hand, UnderSkin can identify the relationship between you and her; if you shake hands with others, it can also analyze the relationship between you and others. UnderSkin has become an "identity" tool, knowing who you are and becoming a microcosm of you, in addition to identity authentication, self-expression and recognition will be more useful.

UnderSkin finally chose the hand as the implant site because it can obtain fingerprints, which is the unique identification mark of human beings; the other hand is also the body part that humans use the most. We wear wedding rings on the hands and make nails on the hands. It will also let the diviner look at the lines in his hand to indicate the "future", and the hand has become the organ with the most "story" on each person's body.

However, New Deal Design still has some obstacles to achieving its goals.

The first is the UI. Usually wearable devices implement their functions through a mobile app, but the appeal of embedded devices is that it gives users some autonomy. What you need is to look up at the world and not look down at the phone. “In an ideal world, there is no need for supporting application support. Because UnderSkin supports information exchange, it is like exchanging business cards in real life.” Currently they have designed two sets of tattoo solutions: one on the back of the hand and the other on the palm of the hand. And the latter is a more private interface. UnderSkin emits different colors of light when performing different actions (such as holding a lover's hand or issuing a health alert).

The second obstacle is the infrastructure. Although it is not dangerous to implant electronic devices in the skin, it is much more complicated than making a pierced ear on the ear. “Do the hospitals do such implants? Obviously, the threshold for implant operations is still very high. Can tattoo shops be implanted with UnderSkin? I don’t think people will agree.” In addition, who will collect the personal data collected by UnderSkin? ? Yoo said that they have a potential solution that draws on a bitcoin-like module chain to protect data security.

In addition to the above two issues, Yoo is also concerned about the life of the UnderSkin sensor. It's important to know that today's low-cost sensors are rapidly changing design and technology, and design companies may not be able to predict what kind of sensors will appear after ten or twenty years, making it difficult to repeat the subcutaneous implant of sensors.
