The Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government have always attached great importance to the development and construction of nuclear power. In 2004, the Guangdong Provincial Nuclear Power Construction Leading Group was established to formulate a special plan for the development of nuclear power. It is proposed that by 2020 the installed nuclear power capacity in Guangdong Province will reach 24 million kilowatts, the scale under construction will reach 10 million kilowatts, and the energy self-sufficiency rate will increase from 13%. 20% of the development goals.

In the first phase of production, the coal consumption of 10 million tons per year will be reduced. The Taishan nuclear power plant is adjacent to the Pearl River Delta power load center area. After completion, it can supply electricity to the area and ease the environmental pressure of building more power plants in the load center of the Pearl River Delta. According to reports, the construction of the Taishan nuclear power plant will not only help improve the safety and stability of Guangdong's energy supply, but also balance the electricity demand of the Guangdong power grid during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period.
