Los Angeles ordering BetaLED to replace city street lights

On September 24th, the Los Angeles City Council recently ordered Ruud Lighting's BetaLED® luminaires to replace local and residential snake headlights as part of the city's green streetlight project.

The city plans to renovate the project to replace all of the city's 140,000 high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) with LED lighting fixtures in the next five years. It is estimated that the replacement of LED street lights will reduce the city's energy consumption by 40%, and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40,500 tons per year, or equivalent to reducing 6,700 cars on urban roads. The city will save approximately $10 million annually in terms of reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide costs.

The advantages of LEDway streetlights include:

• Lower total cost of ownership. Because LEDway streetlights reduce energy and maintenance costs, LEDway streetlights reduce total cost of ownership and free up funds for other budget and capital expenditures.

• Save energy costs. Compared to high pressure sodium lamps, LEDway streetlights typically have an energy savings of 40-60%. Lighting control using wireless and power line carrier technology can further enhance the overall energy savings of the LED system.

• Near zero maintenance. All cities have found that LEDway streetlights can significantly extend their expected lifespan, so the use of LED streetlights requires little maintenance and saves the extra cost of replacing the fixtures.

• Safer and clearer. LED lights produce white light and can significantly improve color temperature. LED lights feature a unique optical control design that enables more uniform light output, eliminates dark spots between fixtures, and creates a safer environment for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

• Contains no harmful substances. LED street lights are RoHS compliant and contain no mercury or other harmful substances compared to conventional light sources.

• Reduce light pollution. LEDway streetlights have been certified by IESNA and adhere to the International Dark Sky Association guidelines. The patented NanoOpticTM technology concentrates light into the target area without spreading to nearby areas or to the night sky.

• Reduce the carbon footprint. Because LED street lights are energy efficient and leading in design, LED street lights reduce waste and reduce energy consumption, thereby reducing the city's carbon footprint.

• Reduce costs, reuse, and recycling. LEDway products are manufactured using 20-25% (by weight) post-consumer recycled materials (aluminum casting and extrusion). 70% (by weight) of the LEDway components are cast and extruded from aluminum and are easy to recycle. Corrugated packaging is 100% recyclable.
