Toyota acquires partial white LED patent rights from European manufacturers

Toyota Synthetic has obtained a patent for some white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) owned by European manufacturers. This patent refers to a white LED composed of a silicate-based fluorescent material that converts blue light into yellow light by wavelength, and a blue LED. The patent has been in force in Japan, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan and China. Among the patents in these regions, Toyota Synthetic has obtained a 20% patent.

The patent was originally owned by Tridonic Optoelectronics of Australia, Leuchtst of fwerk Breitungen of Germany and Litec of Germany. After Toyota Synthetic was authorized, it produced and sold the company's white LED "TGWhiteHi" in the form of a license fee. After obtaining 20% of the rights, the company still has to pay the license fee in the production and sales of TGWhiteHi, but “the license fee will be reduced accordingly due to the partial rights. It is not convenient to disclose the specific amount, but it is very low. (Toyota Synthetic).
As a white LED using a blue LED, another method for fluorescent materials is to use a YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet)-based material and a TAG (yttrium aluminum garnet)-based material. White LEDs using YAG materials are currently the mainstream, and it is said that Nichia Chemical Industry and Germany OSRAM have basic patents. Toyota Synthetic has accepted the white LED related patent license for YAG materials from Nichia Chemical Industry since it reached a settlement with Nichia Chemical on the GaN blue LED patent dispute in September 2002. Regarding white LEDs using TAG-based materials and blue LEDs, there are more and more ways to adopt this method in Taiwan.
