The 12th RFID World Application Innovation Conference 2017 took place at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, bringing together over 300 leading companies from the RFID industry chain, experts, and retail users. The event focused on discussing future trends in the industry and exploring new development models. During the conference, Mr. Li Feng, Technical Business Manager of the Global IoT Retail Sales Department at Intel China Ltd., presented a talk on "Intel Responsive Retail Sensor Solution," introducing an innovative and cost-effective approach to smart retail.
Mr. Li explained that Intel's motivation for developing this solution stems from two major challenges in the retail sector: inventory management and customer experience. According to global statistics, stockouts, overstocking, and inaccurate inventory tracking result in $1 trillion in losses annually—equivalent to 8% of total retail sales. By addressing these issues, retailers can significantly improve their performance. Additionally, he highlighted how large-scale retail has diminished the personalized customer experience seen in earlier eras, which is another key driver behind the responsive retail initiative.
The Intel Responsive Retail Sensor Solution features ceiling-mounted sensors capable of adjusting signal strength to cover approximately 15 square meters. These sensors transmit real-time data via wired or wireless connections to a gateway, which acts as a local processing unit before sending the information to the cloud for big data analysis. This three-tier architecture includes the sensor (front-end), gateway (middle-end), and cloud (back-end), enabling efficient and accurate inventory tracking.
According to Mr. Li, the solution offers two major benefits: real-time inventory monitoring and customer behavior insights. Each RFID tag is read every second, allowing instant updates on stock levels and product movement. This helps retailers avoid out-of-stock situations and better understand customer preferences. The system also supports integration with other data sources like video, offering a comprehensive view of in-store activity.
The Intel® Retail Sensor Solution has already been successfully implemented in stores such as Levi’s in San Francisco, where it helped reduce stockout issues and boost sales. It is also being used to improve product positioning in other retail environments. With the upcoming release of the Intel Rev 1b product, which has passed Chinese certification, the solution is set to expand into the Chinese market soon.
Looking ahead, Intel plans to enhance the solution by integrating video analytics, Wi-Fi, and BLE technologies. Future features may include 3D store modeling, customer psychology analysis, and advanced statistical tools. Mr. Li expressed hope for partnerships in China, emphasizing that Intel will provide software and hardware support to help deploy the solution effectively.
Overall, the Intel® Retail Sensor Solution offers a powerful tool for improving inventory accuracy, reducing losses, and enhancing customer experiences, making it a valuable asset for modern retailers.
