ArgoAI, a Pittsburgh-based artificial intelligence company, has been making waves in the autonomous vehicle industry. Backed by Ford, the company has grown from just 20 employees a year ago to nearly 200 today, showcasing rapid expansion. However, Bryan Salesky, ArgoAI's CEO, acknowledges that bringing self-driving cars to market in 2021 remains a complex challenge. In February of this year, Ford became ArgoAI’s largest shareholder, pledging $1 billion over five years to focus on robotics and virtual driving systems. The company was founded by Bryan Salesky, a former Google employee, and Peter Rander, a former Uber engineer. Both graduated from the Carnegie Mellon National Robotics Engineering Center and left their previous roles at the end of last year to launch ArgoAI. On the first anniversary of its founding, Salesky shared insights into the challenges of developing self-driving technology. He highlighted the need for advanced sensing systems like LiDARs, cameras, and radars, as well as millions of miles of real-world testing. “We are innovating our sensing hardware and software platform to reduce costs—by minimizing the number of sensors and increasing range and resolution,” he said. “While we're making progress, there's still a lot of work ahead.” Currently, ArgoAI is conducting tests in Pittsburgh and Michigan, focusing on improving the car’s ability to handle complex and unpredictable driving scenarios. Salesky emphasized that the field is still in its early stages. “Those who believe self-driving cars will be available in the market within months or even a few years don’t fully understand the current state of AI or the challenges of safely deploying autonomous technology.” Ford aims to introduce Level 4 self-driving vehicles—such as taxis or delivery cars—within four years, though specific details remain undisclosed. Salesky stressed a pragmatic approach, acknowledging that there are no shortcuts. “We’re committed to building a reliable system that earns public trust, not making exaggerated claims about what we can do right now.” The goal is to deliver mature, safe, and trustworthy autonomous driving technology in the long run.
