When a motor or other inductive load controlled by an inverter is stopped, energy consumption braking is typically used. This method allows the kinetic energy of the motor and the magnetic energy stored in the coil to be dissipated through an energy-consuming component, enabling the system to stop quickly. Once the power supply is cut off, the inverter’s inverter circuit reverses its conduction, feeding back any residual energy to the DC bus of the inverter. As a result, the voltage on the DC bus increases. When it reaches a certain threshold, the inverter's braking resistor is activated, converting this energy into heat and maintaining the DC bus voltage at a safe level.

1. Protecting the inverter from regenerative energy: During rapid stopping, inertia causes a significant amount of regenerative energy to be produced. If not properly managed, this energy can directly affect the inverter’s DC circuit. In some cases, this may cause the inverter to trigger a fault, while in more severe situations, it could even damage the device. The use of a braking resistor effectively addresses this issue, safeguarding the inverter from the effects of motor-generated regenerative energy.

2. Ensuring stable power grid operation: By converting regenerative energy into heat during rapid motor braking, the braking resistor prevents this energy from being fed back into the power grid. This helps avoid voltage fluctuations in the grid, ensuring smooth and reliable operation of the electrical network. Additionally, using a braking resistor improves the overall efficiency and lifespan of the inverter system, making it a critical component in industrial and commercial applications.
