Coal calorific value measurement - Calorimeter

Calorimeter is the device used to measure the heat released when coal burns. The unit of coal calorific value is usually in kilojoules per gram (kJ/g) or megajoules per kilogram (MJ/kg). In China, it is commonly expressed in calories, where 1 calorie equals 4.186 joules.

The calorimeter consists of several key components: a combustion oxygen bomb, an inner cylinder, an outer cylinder, a stirrer, a temperature sensor, a sample ignition system, and a water reservoir. These parts work together to accurately measure the heat generated during the combustion process.

The oxygen bomb is typically made from heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant alloys like nickel-chromium. It must be able to withstand high temperatures and pressures, maintain airtightness, and remain unaffected by corrosive gases produced during combustion.

The inner cylinder, often made of copper or stainless steel, contains water and houses the oxygen bomb. Its shape can vary, but it is usually elliptical or rhombic. The outer cylinder acts as an insulating layer, surrounding the inner cylinder with a 10–12 mm gap for thermal insulation.

The stirrer inside the calorimeter ensures uniform mixing of the water, and its speed is maintained at around 400–600 revolutions per minute. The temperature measurement system requires high precision, with a resolution of at least 0.001K to capture small temperature changes accurately.

Additional accessories include the combustion dish, pressure gauge, ignition device, and press cake machine. The combustion dish is usually made of platinum or nickel-chromium, while the ignition device uses a low-voltage power supply to ignite the sample. The press cake machine helps compress coal samples into a compact form for accurate testing.

Common equipment models include the ZDHW-2002 automatic calorimeter, ZDHW-6 microcomputer double-cylinder calorimeter, and ZDHW-2010B intelligent compressor refrigeration calorimeter. These instruments are widely used in coal processing, metallurgy, and energy industries for precise calorific value analysis.
