LG develops quantum dot LED backlight panel to display gamut expansion by 30%

LG presented a new panel at the just-concluded SID International Display Information Conference, which uses quantum-dot LEDs as its backlight, increasing the display color gamut of the panel by 30%. The so-called quantum dot is a semiconductor particle with a diameter between a few nanometers and 20 nanometers. This particle often has a bandgap at the position where it exists, so it is suitable for luminescent materials. With this quantum dot LED as the backlight, the color purity of the liquid crystal panel will be further improved, and the color gamut will be expanded by 30%.

In general, increasing the color gamut of a liquid crystal panel in RGB color mode tends to cause an increase in power consumption. This is because, in order to expand the gamut range, the color purity of the color filter is increased, and the latter is increased to lower the light transmittance. In order to maintain the brightness of the panel, it is necessary to increase the brightness of the backlight, thereby increasing the power consumption.

The quantum dot LED backlight does not need to enhance the color density of the color filter while improving the color purity, so the power consumption of the liquid crystal panel is not improved. Moreover, by changing the size of the quantum dots, the quantum dot LED illumination wavelength can be controlled.

LG did not disclose the materials used in this quantum dot LED backlight and the mass production time of the liquid crystal panel.
