OSRAM joins Infineon to introduce 100 LED energy-saving lamps for Sri Lankan fishermen

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Infineon Technologies are working together to promote sustainable development and environmental protection. German company Diana EL ectronic Systems has partnered with OSRAM's partner network led Light for you to develop an energy-saving LED light for use in Sri Lanka for the Global Nature Fund, which local fishermen use when fishing at night. The lamp replaces the kerosene lamp that is harmful to the environment.

There are 85,000 canoes in Sri Lanka, most of whom live in the mangrove swamps at night. The fishermen light up the kerosene lamp to bring the prawns over, and then use the special shrimp to capture. Although this method of shrimp catching is in line with the principle of sustainable development, the kerosene lamps used by fishermen pose a serious threat to the surrounding environment. Leaking kerosene can pollute water quality and spawning grounds, and the kerosene lamp's carbon dioxide emissions are even more alarming. The 85,000 canoe fishermen in Sri Lanka ignite 100,000 liters of kerosene per night, which is 30 million liters a year, equivalent to 75,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.

LED lights specially developed for Sri Lanka

To solve this problem, the Global Fund for Nature launched a program on the theme of “Introduction of night fishing LEDs and compact energy-saving fluorescent lamps to improve the lives of Sri Lankan fishermen”. The Global Fund for Nature is an international environmental and nature conservation foundation co-sponsored by the Wuppertal-Institut, Dicota and Sika AG to promote environmentally friendly The use of LED lights in night fishing and the use of other forms of energy efficient lighting in homes and public buildings. With the support of LED Light for you (LLFY) partners Osram and Infineon, Diana Electronic has successfully developed durable, waterproof, low-cost LED lighting that replaces the kerosene lamps currently used by fishermen. As the first phase of the program, the Global Fund for Nature is currently working to distribute 100 盏 such LED lights to fishermen. The long-term goal of this program is to eventually replace all kerosene lamps.

The LLFY network provides guidance for the highly segmented LED market, supports potential users of LED technology, and helps them find the right partner for LED lighting projects. All partners are certified according to strict quality standards. The luminaire manufactured by Diana Electronic uses a standard LED driver developed by Infineon and an amber Golden Dragon LED manufactured by OSRAM.

In this regard, Michael Wohs, European sales manager for OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Europe, said, “On the one hand, this program helps protect the sensitive ecosystems of mangrove wetlands, avoids the damage caused by kerosene leakage, and reduces CO2 emissions; On the one hand, it also provides fishermen with innovative technologies that can continue to fish at night, thus ensuring their main source of income.” Osram’s amber Golden Dragon LED emits light that is very similar to kerosene lamps and therefore does not affect fishermen’s capture. the amount.

The plan marks a major step forward in Sri Lanka's introduction of energy-efficient lighting and will make a significant contribution to protecting the local environment. As early as 2008, OSRAM and the Global Nature Fund have provided energy-saving products for fishermen in Lake Victoria, East Africa. OSRAM provides long-term support to less developed countries and regions to help them use energy-efficient lighting technology more effectively.
