IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee for new consumer applications

The development of the emerging 802.15.4-based ultra-low-power wireless network is expected to revolutionize the consumer electronics industry: new products, new features, new connected homes, and possibly no battery.

The original version of 802.15.4 ZigBee was approved in 2003 and was upgraded in 2006. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard was originally developed for industrial wireless sensor networks, but has now expanded into many other areas of technology, including healthcare, retail, agriculture, and security. For low-rate applications in the home automation and entertainment industries, ZigBee and ZigBee RF4CE are probably the best solutions. Many companies are currently working with transceivers and modules that comply with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

There are several dedicated low-power wireless LAN solutions for sensing and control networks, but the open standard ZigBee/IEEE 820.15.4 seems to be the most influential.

A wide range of ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 standards

ZigBee's goal is a wide range of commercial applications, home automation and industrial markets. It provides a strong and dynamic standard body and an active marketing department. The "standard" ZigBee is suitable for a wide range of low-speed, medium-range wireless LAN applications. ZigBee Pro improves anti-jamming robustness in complex radio environments, increases coverage and supports more nodes.

ZigBee also has a number of proprietary standards for specific applications. These dedicated standards are less content and more targeted to tasks, they require less MIPS and flash, and may have lower power consumption. Special standards for smart energy, remote control and home automation have been released.

There is also a ZigBee "Green Energy" standard for energy harvesting solution developers that is developing guidelines for seamless connectivity of ZigBee networks and sensors for ultra-low power consumption. This set of features is expected to be a complete set of standards by the end of 2009. ZigBee said that "green energy" will be able to expand the deployment of switches, sensors and controllers using energy collected in residential, commercial and industrial environments.

ZigBee RF4CE for remote control
In March 2009, the specification of the RF4CE Consortium (formed by Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Samsung) was adopted by the ZigBee Alliance to provide a multi-vendor interoperable RF-based remote control device standard for the consumer electronics industry. What makes it special is the easy-to-use two-way wireless connection.

ZigBee RF4CE is designed for home entertainment and automation applications that do not require ZigBee to provide a fully functional wireless mesh network. It reduces memory capacity requirements, reduces implementation costs, and provides a simple development and testing path. The standard also offers new features such as transmission through walls and cabinet doors. In addition, with the new ZigBee low-power feature, it can rely on hard-wired coin cells to operate the controller for 10 years or longer. time.

ZigBee RF4CE Features for Consumer Electronics Today, most home remotes use infrared technology decades ago. In addition to short distances and narrow bandwidth, it also requires the user to align the infrared remote control device with the appliance to be controlled. ZigBee RF4CE devices do not need to be aligned, so they can be hidden in closets or cabinets.

GreenPeak offers an RF4CE remote reference design that allows the RF remote to operate on a battery for more than 10 years, with less than $2 per material for each remote.

RF technology offers a much larger range of remote control than infrared, enabling the use of a single remote control to manage entertainment, environment, security and other applications throughout the home. After adjusting the air conditioning temperature in one room, go downstairs to check the security system, then enter another room to adjust the sound system, and finally go back upstairs to change the TV channel. The RF4CE device can control all devices with a single remote control.

Because ZigBee RF4CE supports interactivity, there is no need to adjust the volume in front of the TV or watch TV to set the DVR recording time. It can even interact remotely with TV or Internet e-commerce services, purchase products and read/reply E-mails from anywhere in the home, all done remotely.

Perhaps the most exciting trend in low-power features is the possibility of eliminating the need for a battery, which means no maintenance is required. The first generation of RF4CE remotes will work with a single button battery. Future remote controls may be able to permanently get rid of the battery and obtain all the required transmission energy by collecting energy from ambient light and pressure and movement during use. One contemplated ZigBee "green energy" application is a lighting switch that does not require the use of a battery or is attached to a wire. The energy consumed by simply opening or closing the switch with a finger is sufficient to transmit the control signal to the lamp on the other end of the room with the ZigBee slave. This can significantly reduce building and installation costs and/or make planning within the home more flexible and creative.

In the next 10 years, the emergence of ZigBee remote control devices will lead to changes in homes and offices. ZigBee can help make people's lives easier, and because people don't have to use batteries, people's environment will become cleaner - current ordinary remotes consume 4 billion batteries a year. Utilizing the ultra-low power consumption of ZigBee RF4CE, the life of each battery will be 10 times faster, which will greatly reduce battery consumption.
