On May 10, 2018, Beijing – Keysight announced the provision of a 28 GHz channel measurement solution for NTT DOCOMO to help it conduct channel exploration research projects. As a leading technology company, Keysight helps companies, service providers and governments accelerate innovation and create a secure and connected world. NTT DOCOMO is the leading mobile operator in Japan.
The two companies have reached an agreement to jointly conduct millimeter-wave frequency channel sounding research and develop next-generation 5G wireless communication systems. This project is part of this agreement.
To characterize the air interface of a new 5G wireless communication system, 5G channel sounding must be performed. That is, parameters such as path loss, power delay distribution, reflection, and various fading distributions, including Doppler shift, need to be measured. This requires designing an efficient and stable 5G channel model. With Keysight's 28 GHz 5G channel sounding solution and wideband MIMO data capture technology, engineers can measure angular spread and increase the resolution of multipath parameters with significantly fewer measurements.
The current high-frequency channel detection project uses Keysight's 28 GHz 5G MIMO channel sounding reference solution. Keysight and NTT DOCOMO have recently collaborated on a similar project to study the 60 GHz fixed frequency use case. Its research has been shared with the 5G industry to accelerate the development and deployment of 5G ("Dropping characteristics of the human body in the 67 GHz band", IEICE TransacTIon on CommunicaTIons Journal).
Yukihiko Okumura, Head of Research, 5G Wireless Access Network, NTT DOCOMO Research Lab, said: "We understand that we need to work closely with test and measurement providers focused on high frequency applications to develop and validate 5G's underlying technologies. Keysight is strong in 5G mobile communication channel detection technology. With their technical support and expertise, we can understand the channel characteristics of millimeter-wave frequencies, especially in high-speed driving."
