Gree builds a car and rumors that the layout of new energy has never stopped

Gree Electric, led by its chairman Dong Mingzhu, is making waves in the new energy vehicle sector, signaling a bold move into a rapidly growing industry. Recently, the company has been in talks with several top players in the electric vehicle space, sparking speculation about its long-term ambitions. This has created a buzz around the "making a car dream" that Gree has been quietly nurturing. During a recent visit to Luoyang, Dong Mingzhu and his team visited AVIC Optoelectronics and LYC Bearing Co., Ltd. AVIC, a major player in new energy vehicle components, has attracted significant attention, especially after Zhuhai Yinlong, a company backed by Dong, announced plans to build a new energy vehicle production base in Luoyang. This development has reignited rumors about Gree’s potential entry into the automotive market. According to AVIC’s official microblog, on December 10, 2017, Dong Mingzhu visited the AVIC Photonics Exhibition Hall, where he gained insights into the company's strategic planning and product features. He also met with the New Energy Vehicles Division and discussed key development issues related to AVIC’s electric vehicle initiatives. In addition to AVIC, Gree also visited LYC Bearing Co., Ltd. and arranged for an accounting firm to conduct due diligence on their bearings. This suggests that Gree is exploring various partnerships to strengthen its position in the industry. A spokesperson for Gree clarified that although the company had previously paused its acquisition of Yinlong, it remains focused on the new energy sector. The intention behind the previous acquisition was to build a solid foundation for future growth. If Gree does enter the new energy field, it could expand into areas like photovoltaic air conditioners, new energy appliances, and energy storage systems. AVIC Optoelectronics, a leading connector manufacturer, has strong ties to the new energy vehicle industry. Its products are used by major automakers such as BYD, JAC, Chery, and Yutong. The company offers comprehensive connectivity solutions, including charging connectors and power distribution units. Zhuhai Yinlong, which received support from Dong Mingzhu, signed a major agreement with Luoyang City earlier this year. The plan includes investing 15 billion yuan to establish a new energy vehicle production base, along with a titanium battery facility. The project aims to produce a wide range of electric vehicles, including commercial, special, sanitation, pickup, and agricultural vehicles. At the China International Commercial Vehicles and Parts Exhibition in November, Gree made its debut in the new energy vehicle industry chain, showcasing products such as commercial vehicle molds, electric bus compressors, charging piles, capacitors, and motor motors. This marks a clear step toward diversification. Gree’s vice president and chief engineer, Tan Jianming, stated that this move represents the company’s broader strategy to expand into new markets. He emphasized that electric vehicles are a key direction for the future, and Gree has already laid a solid foundation in the electric vehicle supply chain, including air conditioning systems and energy storage equipment. Zhao Zhiwei, assistant to the president of Gree, noted that while the company sees new energy as a crucial growth area, transformation is not easy without the right opportunities. Since 2013, when Gree achieved over 100 billion in revenue, the company has been searching for the next big opportunity, leading to continuous diversification efforts. From refrigerators and small appliances to mobile phones, Gree has never stopped exploring new markets. Zhao added that while the company has the technology to adapt its electrical, electronic control, and compressor products for electric vehicles, it will not apply for vehicle manufacturing licenses in the short term. Instead, Gree aims to first solidify its position through core components and systems before entering the market more formally.
