Gree builds a car and rumors that the layout of new energy has never stopped

Today's new energy vehicles are on the brink of a major breakthrough, and every car manufacturer is vying for a spot on the crowded market. Gree Electric's chairman, Dong Mingzhu, is also eyeing this promising industry. Recent reports suggest that Gree has been in contact with several leading companies in the new energy vehicle sector, fueling speculation about its potential entry into the automotive market. Gree Electric, including Chairman Dong Mingzhu, recently visited Zhonghang Optoelectronics and LYC Bearing Co., Ltd. in Luoyang. Given that AVIC is a top player in new energy vehicle components, and Zhuhai Yinlong recently announced its production base project in Luoyang, rumors about Gree’s ambitions in the new energy vehicle field have resurfaced. A photo caption reads: “Gree is making a stir again. Its layout in the new energy sector has never stopped.” According to AVIC Optoelectronics’ official WeChat account, on December 10, 2017, Dong Mingzhu visited AVIC Photonics Exhibition Hall and learned about the company’s overall planning and product features. During the visit, he and his team toured the New Energy Vehicles Division and discussed development strategies with AVIC officials. In addition to visiting AVIC Optoelectronics, Gree also met with LYC Bearing Co., Ltd. in Luoyang and arranged for an accounting firm to conduct due diligence on their bearings. This suggests that Gree is actively exploring partnerships and potential investments in the new energy sector. When asked about the suspension of the acquisition of Yinlong, a Gree spokesperson told reporters that the move was part of a broader strategy to build a strong foundation. If Gree enters the new energy vehicle market, it would support the future growth of photovoltaic air conditioners, new energy appliances, and energy storage systems. Notably, AVIC Optoelectronics is closely tied to the new energy vehicle industry. As a leader in China’s connector market, its main downstream sectors include defense and electric vehicles. The company has a strong presence in the new energy vehicle connector market, supplying products to major automakers such as BYD, JAC, Chery, Changan, Dongfeng, and Yutong. In August this year, Zhuhai Yinlong, backed by Dong Mingzhu, signed strategic cooperation agreements with Luoyang City. The company plans to invest 15 billion yuan to establish a new energy vehicle production base in Luoyang, along with a titanium battery production facility. The planned output includes 10,000 pure electric commercial vehicles, 5,000 pure electric special vehicles, 5,000 new energy sanitation vehicles, new energy pickup trucks, and pure electric agricultural machinery annually. At the China International Commercial Vehicles and Parts Exhibition held on November 2nd, Gree made its debut, showcasing products from the new energy vehicle supply chain, including commercial vehicle molds, electric bus compressors, charging piles, vehicle capacitors, and motor units. “This represents Gree’s diversification strategy,” said Tan Jianming, vice president and chief engineer at Gree. He added that in the future, Gree will expand its product range in this area. “Without opportunities in new energy, it would be difficult for Gree to transform,” said Zhao Zhiwei, assistant to the president of Gree. Since 2013, when Gree’s revenue exceeded 100 billion yuan, the company has been searching for the next big growth area, leading to a series of diversification efforts. Over the past three years, Gree has expanded into refrigerators, small appliances, and even mobile phones. “Electrical, electronic control, and compressor products can be applied to new energy vehicles. Gree’s technology in these areas can be upgraded to meet the needs of electric vehicles,” Zhao explained. However, he clarified that in the short term, Gree will not apply for production qualifications to manufacture new energy vehicles. Instead, the company aims to solidify its position in the new energy vehicle industry by focusing on core products and components based on the three power systems.
