[High-tech Conference] Ruifeng Optoelectronics Xiaoming: Mini-LED trends and challenges in backlighting and display applications

From December 21st to 22nd, 2017, the 2017 High-Tech LED Annual Meeting and Golden Globe Awards Ceremony, hosted by Gaogong LED, took place in Shenzhen Baoan Dunxi Road. The event focused on the theme of "Deepening the Smoke and Softening the Strength, Deep Integration, and Tapping New Opportunities." It was a major gathering that brought together industry leaders, professionals, and experts from across the LED sector. As one of the most anticipated annual events in the LED industry, the 2017 meeting once again attracted over 400 industry elites. Participants had the opportunity to explore the future landscape of the LED industry, including market trends, capital flow, technological advancements, and strategies for deep integration. The discussions aimed to uncover new opportunities and address key challenges facing the industry. On the afternoon of December 21st, during the opening ceremony titled “Industry Opportunities and Corporate Strategies Focusing on the Chinese Market,” sponsored by Jingyuan Optoelectronics, Ruifeng Optoelectronics’ Technical Director, Yan Xiaoming, delivered a keynote speech on the development and challenges of Mini-LED in backlighting and display applications.

When discussing Mini-LED, it’s worth noting that Jingyuan Optoelectronics has been actively involved in this field for some time. Ruifeng Optoelectronics has also established collaborations with Jingyuan in the Mini-LED domain. According to Yan Xiaoming, the company aims to become a leading technology-driven enterprise globally. Given the scale of competition from major players like Molex, Ruifeng focuses on niche, high-tech products. Innovation remains at the core of their strategy, and they are eager to make breakthroughs in the Mini-LED space. Mini-LED is typically defined as chips ranging between 100 to 200 microns, while Micro-LED refers to even smaller chips, around 30 to 50 microns. Currently, Mini-LED is primarily used in backlights, but not yet widely commercialized. Compared to Micro-LED, which is still in early development stages, Mini-LED is seen as more achievable in the near term. The industry often refers to Micro-LED as a “500-day challenge,” meaning that within the next 18 months, we will see whether it can move toward commercialization. While there is no current market for Micro-LED, the access point is crucial, and it could significantly influence the development of Mini-LED. Yan Xiaoming believes that the best entry points for Mini-LED would be small-to-medium-sized backlights (6 inches or less) and large TVs (55 inches or more). From an indoor display perspective, Mini-LED may outperform existing small-pitch screens in terms of performance. Whether it's Mini-LED or Micro-LED, the biggest technical challenge lies in mass transfer. Each company has its own approach, often closely guarded as a trade secret. The transfer process is closely related to chip structure, which can be either vertical (with top and bottom electrodes) or flip-chip (with coplanar electrodes). “Technically, Micro-LED isn’t impossible, but the real challenge comes from choosing the right process route and equipment. What we see today is mostly theoretical solutions, but practical equipment is rare. Ruifeng Optoelectronics is working with major institutions and companies both domestically and internationally, and we have made relatively good progress so far,” concluded Yan Xiaoming.
