As the fourth-generation light source after incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and high-pressure gas lamps, LED lamps have an average power saving of more than 50% compared with ordinary lamps under the same illumination brightness, and do not contain harmful substances such as mercury and lead, and have an average service life. It is 3-5 times that of ordinary lamps. Semiconductor lighting has been included in the national medium- and long-term science and technology development plan, and will be given priority guidance and support during the 11th Five-Year Plan period.

With the global energy crisis increasing, semiconductor lighting with long life, energy saving and environmental protection has become a recognized energy saving and environmental protection channel in the world. Ai Yamin, deputy director of TEDA Management Committee of Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Zone, said in an interview: "We will fully support the promotion and application of LED lighting projects. With the advancement of technology and the decline of lamp costs, LEDs will gradually be made. The light source covers the entire area and contributes to promoting energy conservation, environmental protection, and building a conservation-oriented society."

It is reported that semiconductor lighting is one of the 20 key development projects in Tianjin. The high-power LED lighting product development and industrialization projects have been included in the 2008 major projects of 20 independent innovation industrialization. Dr. Niu Pingjuan, Professor of Semiconductor R&D Center of Tianjin Polytechnic University, said: "At present, we have developed 20W-120W full range of new semiconductor energy-saving lamps, garden lamps and indoor lighting lamps, and applied for 11 patents. Initially developed to meet the national standard for vehicle lights. The other research and development direction of high-beam lamps, such as high-beam lamps, is LED automotive headlamp technology. After successful product development, it will be directly applied to the series of cars produced by Tianjin FAW to realize industrialization benefits."

“LED City Lighting” is a green initiative proposed by Cree to establish a LED city lighting demonstration area globally. Through local governments and LED manufacturers, LEDs can be promoted in basic lighting facilities to save energy and protect. Provide a higher quality lighting source for the purpose of reducing the maintenance cost. At present, LED city lighting system has been applied in four cities including Toronto, Canada and Austin, USA.
