Driving in spring weather conditions

Rain reduces visibility, especially at night. It directly affects human visual perception, and when it comes into direct contact with headlights, windshields, roads, and road markings, it produces visibility changes. When the light from sunlight, streetlights, or car headlights is reflected back from the object to the eye, we usually see the object; rain can interfere with the process in a variety of ways.

♦ By filtering out part of the light output and reducing the illumination on the road ahead, rain reduces the efficiency of headlights and other light sources.

♦ When the light illuminates the raindrop, only a part of the light passes, and the rest scatter. Therefore, the rain blocks some of the light reflected by the object, and less light shines into the driver's eyes.

♦ Poor visibility allows people to focus on the front, which reduces the ability to look at the peripheral realm.

Rainwater affects visibility by changing the amount of light that is reflected back from the road to the driver's eyes. Rain makes the road markings less visible. The paint used in the road signs includes reflective materials. In dry conditions, headlight illumination is reflected back from the reflective paint to the driver's eyes. However, water is like a lens that scatters light, which means that much of the light is reflected in different directions. As a result, the driver barely sees the line.

In the spring, fog is also common in many parts of the world. Since the driver's visibility is limited to the depths of the fog, many road traffic accidents occur. As the fog affects the driver's judgment of speed and distance, it will also increase the accident. We look at objects based not on their absolute brightness, but on the difference between the brightness of the object and its background. Heavy fog reduces contrast and causes objects to become dimmer. This makes driving in foggy conditions more difficult.

Increase road safety with LED lighting

Modern lighting technology is increasing the safety of drivers and pedestrians during spring rain and fog.

The advantages of LED in fog and rain can be reflected in three aspects:

♦ inherent directionality of the emitted beam

♦ Wavelength characteristics of white LEDs

♦ The frequency of this wavelength compared to other sources

The difference between LED illumination and all other sources is the dominant wavelength at which it emits energy, and how the droplets interact or affect the beam at that wavelength, especially as the size of the droplet changes.

Light sources that primarily emit light energy in the blue wavelength of the visible spectrum, such as LEDs, perform better than other light sources under low visibility conditions.

The light in the purple region of the spectral range is shorter than the wavelength of light in the red region. Water vapor particles in the atmosphere typically pass light in the yellow-orange-red range, but they tend to scatter blue light. This may be because the water particles are usually similar to the blue wavelength. Therefore, when the weather is fine or the weather is high (the air is coarser than the coarse particles, the molecular scattering is mainly), under the strong scattering of atmospheric molecules, the blue light is scattered to the diffuse sky, and the sky is blue. This phenomenon is called Rayleigh scattering.

Under low visibility conditions, the size of the water particles increases to a level that is no longer similar to the wavelength of the blue light. At this point, their size is comparable to the yellow-orange-red wavelength. Water particles tend to scatter and suppress light in these bands, but pass through the blue light. This is why the sun sometimes appears bluish or greenish due to fog.

From water particle size to wavelength, LEDs are the best choice for low visibility conditions. The color temperature and lighting design creates the best road conditions during the rain and fog. By increasing visibility, LEDs maintain road safety in showers and foggy environments. (Compile: LED network James)
