British "reform" think tank: robots will promote the future employment structure change

A British think tank called “Reform” released a report on February 6, highlighting how the rapid development of science and technology could lead to robots replacing nearly 250,000 jobs in the UK’s public sector. This shift is expected to significantly cut operational costs while boosting efficiency across various government departments.

The *Sunday Times* reported on February 5 that Karl Frei, an expert from the University of Oxford specializing in automation and employment, warned that while low-skilled jobs are most vulnerable, many middle-income roles are also at risk in the coming decades. The Reform report focused on the UK’s public sector workforce, including administrative bodies, law enforcement, and educational institutions. It suggested using new technologies to enhance productivity and service quality. As AI and automation become more widespread, manual tasks are increasingly being taken over by machines, signaling a major transformation in the job market and employment trends. According to Frei’s research, white-collar jobs with a 98% risk of being replaced include insurance adjusters, loan officers, and credit analysts. Middle-income roles facing an 80% risk include train drivers, auditors, and technical writers. Jobs with a 30-55% risk range from judges and detectives to computer programmers and commercial pilots. The Reform report emphasized that intelligent robots will help streamline daily tasks in government operations. It predicts that by 2030, up to 130,000 civil servants could be replaced, saving around £2.6 billion annually. However, some experts remain skeptical. UBS analysts argue that the idea of robots replacing large numbers of workers is exaggerated, noting there’s no evidence yet that automation has reached a level that would cause mass unemployment. Despite these debates, it's widely agreed that smart robots will reshape the future job market. Reform researcher Hitchcock noted that job losses are a sensitive issue requiring careful management. While the introduction of advanced robotics may spark controversy, the goal is to make public services more efficient, secure, and intelligent for the benefit of all.
