Wang Xiaochuan: It is a happy thing to be robbed by artificial intelligence!

If Wang Xiaochuan's rice bowl gets taken over by artificial intelligence, would he be happy? During the Two Sessions, AI became a hot topic that couldn’t be ignored. Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology, emphasized the need for long-term planning in AI development, stating that policies and regulations should be strengthened to address ethical issues, personal privacy, and national security concerns. However, for entrepreneurs riding the AI wave, the current state of AI development seems far from reaching such high-level considerations. Some even argue that being replaced by AI could be a positive change.

As a major player in the AI field, Sogou CEO Wang Xiaochuan shared his insights on artificial intelligence during the Two Sessions.

"Artificial intelligence has two main applications. One is where machines can make decisions on behalf of humans, like playing chess. The other is where machines provide services such as speech recognition, image recognition, and text translation." Wang Xiaochuan believes that major changes are happening in social interactions, and with human-computer interaction, life will become more convenient and efficient.

When talking about the progress in speech and image recognition, Wang Xiaochuan said their speed is simply "unbelievable." For instance, voice can now be automatically converted into text, allowing more command-based control of devices. When you arrive home, you can unlock your door using facial recognition, similar to the "芝麻开门" (Zhāmá Kāimén) experience. In finance, face recognition can also help prevent fraud.

Machine translation has also made great strides. In the past, many people had frustrating experiences where machine translations, though accurate word-by-word, failed to convey the intended meaning. "Now, machine translation is much smoother. In everyday situations where language accuracy isn't critical, it performs quite well," said Wang Xiaochuan, clearly excited about the progress.

Artificial intelligence robots are starting to enter daily life

However, throughout human history, technological development has always been a double-edged sword. Could AI one day become the "Sword of Damocles" hanging over humanity? From the moment AI was created, such questions have never ceased.

"AI isn’t that smart," Wang Xiaochuan said with a smile.

"Although our speech recognition system has reached 97% accuracy, this is under ideal, noise-free conditions." He further explained that unlike humans, machines cannot automatically filter out background noise. In situations where multiple people are speaking at once, it becomes extremely difficult for machines to accurately capture and interpret speech. "Speech recognition is one of our best technologies so far, but the gap between machines and humans is still huge."

Wang Xiaochuan admits that in some repetitive and simple tasks, machines can indeed replace humans. They can learn specific skills through big data training and complete tasks efficiently. However, in certain industries, machines may struggle.

Does AI really replace humans?

Taking the domestic industry as an example, human work involves more than just repetition—it requires comprehensive judgment based on factors like context, tone, and environment. "So, not all service industries will be replaced by machines in the future. In sectors that involve dealing with people or require continuous learning, AI remains uncertain," Wang Xiaochuan said.

For these "clumsy" machines, Wang Xiaochuan doesn’t seem worried. Instead, he sees it as a positive development. "AI replaces only those highly repetitive jobs that require manual labor. It frees up humans to focus on more meaningful and creative tasks."

Regarding Wang Xiaochuan’s comments, some netizens raised questions: Is this just human bias?
