What are the prospects for development in 2014? Six LED trends one by one

The LEDinside report of the Green Energy Division of TrendForce, a global market research organization, pointed out that the output value of the LED packaging market in 2013 was estimated at US $ 12.5 billion, and it will reach US $ 13.39 billion in 2014, with an annual growth rate of 7%. Mainly used in backlight applications of smart phones, the lighting application part has the most significant growth in the engineering, commercial and outdoor lighting markets.

LEDinside organizes the six major changes in the LED application market that are worthy of attention in 2014 as follows:

1. The future growth momentum of TV backlight is limited

According to LEDinside statistics, the penetration rate of LED for TV backlight will reach 95% in 2013. Affected by the saturation of penetration rate and the slowdown of terminal TV sales growth, the output value of LED in TV backlight will face a decline for the first time in 2014.

2. Tablet PC is still the main growth driver of the backlight market

Tablet PCs were affected by the traditional off-season in 2013, and the channel inventory level was high. Shipment in the third quarter was not as expected. The annual shipment was revised down to 196 million units. The annual shipment growth was 33.6. % Dropped to 31.1%, which shows that tablet shipments have cooled slightly. Although the growth rate of tablet PCs will slow down in the future, there is still much room for growth compared to other IT products. LEDinside estimates that the compound annual growth rate of LED output value for tablet backlight applications from 2013 to 2017 will be 8%.

3. iPhone 5S dual FLASH LED design adds imagination space

In 2013, the overall output value of Flash LED was estimated to increase by only 3% due to the impact of the rapid price drop. In order to increase the added value of mobile phone cameras, Apple has introduced the "True tone flash" technology on the iPhone 5S. That is, using two Flash LEDs as a supplementary light. On the original structure of a white Flash LED, a warm LED is added to make up the difference in color temperature. The design of the dual Flash LED is expected to push up the total demand of Flash LED. In 2013, the number used will grow by 27.3% to 1.44 billion, and in 2014 it will reach 1.7 billion. At present, LEDinside is still observing whether other mobile phone manufacturers will follow up, and there is still much room for imagination in the FLASH LED market in the future.

4. Small-pitch LED display technology gradually matures

In addition to the original signal and advertising display purposes, LED manufacturers have also begun to introduce small-pitch LED displays. At present, the minimum pixel pitch of small-pitch LED displays launched by LED manufacturers can reach 1.2 ~ 1.6mm, which has the advantages of good color saturation and high resolution. Especially in the 110-inch display market, the cost is much lower than the LCD screen of the same size. In the long run, it is possible to replace some TV backlight application models and enter the commercial and mass consumer fields.

5. The rise of market demand for commercial, engineering and outdoor lighting

If you look at the LED lighting market, LED packaging will be used in the lighting market. The output value in 2014 will be greatly improved, of which the engineering, commercial and outdoor markets have the most significant growth. Coupled with the rising demand for LED bulbs, lamps and commercial lighting markets, the market demand for mid-power LEDs (Mid Power LEDs) has increased significantly, especially packaging types such as 5630 and 3030 are already mainstream in the market. LEDinside estimates that the output value of mid-power LEDs in 2013 and 2014 will surpass that of high-power LEDs.

6. Backlight and lighting general LED specifications gradually emerge

Due to the fierce price competition in the lighting market, since the 5630 specification was introduced to the market, the cost performance is higher than traditional high-power LEDs and is widely favored by lamp manufacturers. Therefore, LED manufacturers began to find ways to introduce better cost-effective products than 5630. Since the Japanese packaging manufacturer Nichia launched the 757 series of 3030 package products, the market has responded enthusiastically. Therefore, many manufacturers released this specification product in the second quarter of 2013. The 2835 with high current characteristics is also packaged in China. The gradual development of manufacturers can be used not only in the backlight market, but also in the lighting market, which is also favored by customers.

According to the LEDinside survey, compared with 3030 (0.5 ~ 0.9W), 2835, 5630 and 1-3W LEDs, the 3030 package has the best price-performance ratio and the most competitive price. The third quarter of 2013 has reached US $ 0.12 ~ 0.16. It is expected that the 3030 and 2835 packages will replace the 5630 and become the mainstream in the future.
