Facebook Demo Quad Camera Wireless VR Head Showing Santa Cruz

Although Facebook does not explicitly mention it, it seems that wireless room-scale virtual reality heads-up will become a reality in the next two years, and such a headline will be Santa Cruz. Although it is still in the prototype stage, the progress is faster than we expected.

At today's F8 conference, Xiaobian once again learned this head. Facebook’s technical director Mike Skopov showed a video highlighting the progress of augmented reality and computer vision in the past two years.

This video is very important, mainly for two reasons: Facebook not only made great progress on the prototype device, but more importantly, we found that this head will be intermittently annoying cables through computer vision.

The technology that Skolopf mainly talked about is called SLAM, which is instant positioning and map construction. This technology allows the head display to detect how the environment around the user changes through four built-in cameras and map it to the virtual world. Skropoff said: "The head display does not require a mobile phone, no PC, and no special hardware. You just need to wear a device and you can immediately enter VR. It is SLAM that makes all this possible."

Skropov explained: "Because this device has four cameras, as I walk in the real world, these cameras will track my movement in the real world and transform it into a virtual world. In the middle, let the virtual world match my sport perfectly."

“Now, it is very difficult to achieve this in scenarios like VR. If we make a mistake, your virtual world cannot be updated and it will immediately break immersive.”

If you have ever experienced an error in your head, you will understand the feeling that "immersion is broken." This may lead to dizziness and nausea. So, hopefully, Facebook can solve this problem before Santa Cruz goes public. But as to when it will be realized, Skropf has not yet intended to tell us.
